The Chicago Cubs have fallen out of the race for first place in the NL Central as the Milwaukee Brewers now hold a commanding eight-game division lead with under two months remaining in the regular season.

Chicago once sat in sole possession of first place, but the team has fallen off significantly, now on the verge of losing four consecutive series if they drop one of the next two games against the Pittsburgh Pirates after falling 3–2 in Friday’s series opener.

The Cubs once again played sloppy during the loss, committing both a pitcher and hitter pitch clock violation within the first three innings.

To make matters worse, Pete Crow-Armstrong overslid second base in the bottom of the ninth inning with a chance to win the game, turning a potential game-tying run on second with no outs into nobody on base with one out.

Craig Counsell Responds to Cubs’ Recent Struggles

Before the game, manager Craig Counsell attributed the team’s losing stretch to the natural unpredictability of baseball.

Counsell said, “Things not going right is not what’s happening. I think that’s what you fall into. This is baseball that’s happening. You have to be tough enough to roll with that. For us to focus on results is harmful so you focus on things that contribute to us being good.”

Cubs Fans Calling for Craig Counsell’s Firing

Chicago fans, however, believe the team’s inability to succeed falls on Counsell and his questionable leadership and lineup decisions, including his refusal to bench struggling hitters. Calls have mounted for Counsell’s dismissal following the team’s loss to Pittsburgh.

"Craig Counsell has zero emotion or fire for this team. Give me David Ross back, he'd fire this team up," said a fan.

Another wrote, "Fire Craig Counsell. A sack of potatoes could be a better manager at this point. Plus the spuds would have a personality."

"Fire Craig Counsell and sell the team," echoed one more.

Another added, "Fire Craig Counsell and get a manager with a backbone."

"Craig Counsell deserves to lose his job at the end of this season, regardless of the outcome," said one fan.
