That can't be right.
WNBA Broadcast Under Fire for Glaring Paige Bueckers Mistake on Friday originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Paige Bueckers has taken the league by storm in her rookie year with the Dallas Wings. The 23-year-old is currently the frontrunner for the Rookie of the Year title behind averages of 18.4 points, 4.0 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 1.8 steals in 26 games played this season.
While there’s no denying that Bueckers has been outstanding in her debut season, she’s certainly not as good as the WNBA broadcast made her out to be during Friday’s matchup against the Los Angeles Sparks.
According to the WNBA website, Bueckers entered Friday’s game with 479 points and 141 assists to her name. The broadcast, however, congratulated her for supposedly setting a new franchise record of 481 assists this season.
“Paige Bueckers was chasing Odyssey Sims for most assists by a rookie in the season,” said commentator Ron Thulin. “Well, she’s got it, 481. Congratulations, she is just rewriting an entire rookie record book."
“Completely new standards,” agreed analyst Fran Harris. “I mean, she’s doing it before the end of the season.”

To be fair, the commentators based their reaction to a graphic that indicated that Bueckers had set a new franchise record in assists, which, according to the official statistics, just isn’t the case.
The fans on social media weren’t too pleased with the glaring mistake.
"i’m in tears 😭😭😭😭 they said paige had 481 assists like it made any sense. 'she’s rewriting the history books' lmfaoooo," a comment on X read.
"paige had 141 assists going into the game and the league record for a season is 337 assists set by caitlin last year," pointed out another.
"She has over 14 assists per game? Wow, I guess she is better than CC. 😂" a user posted.
"This is just embarrassing," a reaction read.
"why they always out there making fake stats for her? 😭😭😭" another said.
"Absolutely no way that was an honest mistake, it is intentional," accused a fan.
Bueckers has, indeed, set multiple records during what has been an incredible rookie campaign. However, the fact of the matter is, she does not have 481 assists to her name this season, despite what was indicated in the broadcast.
Bueckers, though, did set a franchise record for assists on Friday. The Wings announced the 23-year-old's latest milestone after dishing out her 143rd assist of the season, which is a far cry from 481.
