Commanders' Deatrich Wise swings Joe Burrow like ragdoll, called for horse-collar tackle

Bengals fans held their breath as quarterback Joe Burrow was brought down violently twice during preseason action against the Commanders.

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow was sacked for a 17-yard loss during the first quarter and brought down later on a scary horse-collar tackle by the Commanders' Deatrich Wise Jr. before he left Monday night's NFL preseason game against the Washington Commanders at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland.

Burrow completed nine of his 14 attempts for 62 yards with a touchdown pass to Charlie Jones, but Bengals' fans held their breath as Burrow was violently brought down twice.

"Bengals fans can exhale," ESPN play-by-play announcer Joe Buck said, when Burrow did leave the game in the second quarter. "Burrow's done for the night."

Burrow suffered a season-ending knee injury against Washington during his rookie season, in November 2020.

Burrow, named a Pro Bowler in 2024 for the second time in five NFL seasons, finished the season as the league's leader in passing yardage and touchdown passes.

Burrow suffered a head injury during the third quarter of their NFL Week 18 win against Pittsburgh at Acrisure Stadium. Burrow landed on the football and got a facemask full of turf as he was sacked by the Steelers' Cam Heyward and Nick Herbig. He was evaluated for a concussion, and returned to the game.

Burrow celebrated a touchdown run late in the fourth quarter of the Bengals' NFL Week 17 win against Denver with a Griddy. Earlier in the game, Burrow became the 11th quarterback in NFL history with at least 40 TD passes in a season. In overtime, Burrow broke his own franchise single-season record for passing yards.

During a win in Dallas, Burrow appeared to be limping after his facemask was grabbed and twisted by Cowboys rookie Marist Liufau. The injury did not force Burrow out of the game. Two days later, the NFL announced it would consider employing replay assistance for facemask penalties.

During a Week 10 loss to Baltimore, the Ravens' Marlon Humphrey wasn't penalized for hitting Burrow late during the second half. Later, Ravens defensive lineman Nnamdi Madubuike grabbed Burrow's facemask, but was not penalized.

During a Week 9 win against the Raiders, blood was wiped from Burrow's neck below his ear after a hit after the whistle by Maxx Crosby. The Raiders' defensive end was fined $11,255 for the hit.

Burrow was evaluated for a concussion during the fourth quarter of the NFL Week 6 win against the Giants.

Burrow suffered a season-ending arm injury in 2023. He played in 10 games in that season as well as the 2020 season.
