When the Jacksonville Jaguars selected Trevor Lawrence with the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, he was labeled the best quarterback prospect since Andrew Luck. Roughly four years later, there's already chatter about him being replaced.

After a rough rookie season, Lawrence bounced back in 2022 by completing 66.3% of his passes for 4,113 yards with 25 touchdowns and eight interceptions. The Jaguars reached the Divisional Round of the playoffs and seemed to be on the rise. Unfortunately for Lawrence, he hasn't been able to get back to that level.

In the past two seasons, Lawrence has thrown 32 touchdowns and 21 interceptions. Not only has he struggled to take care of the football, he has dealt with a few injuries, including a concussion and AC joint sprain. That's not what the Jaguars want to see, especially after giving him a five-year, $275 million contract in April of 2024.

Even though Lawrence is just 25 years old, there's already pressure on him to perform this season. In fact, former New York Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum believes the Jaguars should be in the market for a quarterback if Lawrence struggles this fall.

“This is about his fundamentals more than anything,” Tannenbaum said. “I know he was hurt last year. I think he’s gotten a little bit of a free pass. I know he has guaranteed money next year, but to me, it’s getting late early. If I’m Liam Coen and their new general manager, I’m thinking about drafting a quarterback if we don’t see meaningful improvement there.”

NFL fans aren't ready to call this a make-or-break season for Lawrence.

"They could draft a QB…….. to be the backup. Trevor has way too much talent, and $$$ on the books, for them to be moving on," one fan argued.

"Doug Pederson is the most overrated coach ever. Go look at Trevor Lawrence’s fundamentals the last two preseason games compared to the last couple seasons under Pederson," a second fan wrote on X. "Trevor already looks much better fundamentally."

"Bro has never watched a Jags game with 16 in his life No QB would be successful with the old regime the Jags had..hilarious," a Jaguars fan said.

"Every time I hear that Tannenbaum guy talk, it’s mind blowing he was an actual GM in the league," another fan commented.

The Jaguars are most likely committed to Lawrence until at least 2028.

If the Jaguars wanted to release Lawrence next offseason, they'd have to take on $88.5 million in dead money. That number drops to $44 million in 2027, which still isn't ideal for the front office.

Jacksonville would only take on $7.5 million in dead money if Lawrence is cut in 2028. That's a much easier pill to swallow.

For now though, Lawrence will try to prove that he can be Jacksonville's franchise quarterback. He'll certainly have two potential-packed weapons at his disposal in Brian Thomas Jr. and Travis Hunter.

Lawrence will make his 2025 season debut on Sept. 7 when the Jaguars host Bryce Young and the Carolina Panthers. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ET.
