Lane Kiffin is never afraid to troll a fellow SEC program. Especially when Auburn is on the receiving end, Kiffin likes to have some fun on social media. Monday was just the latest example, using an emoji to give his thoughts on recent comments by Hugh Freeze.
A confusing situation, at least from the outside, appears to be brewing on the Plains. Freeze has claimed the offensive staff has multiple play-callers, potentially one for each down. And then there are the quarterbacks, three of whom Freeze claims to be comfortable playing.
This could like to a ton of different combinations on gamedays. RedditCFB’s official X account laid the whole thing out, where Kiffin swooped in with a simple quote tweet. He used a fire emoji, a short and simple way to poke at Auburn.
Laying out the strategy himself recently, offensive coordinator Derrick Nix is scheduled to be in charge of first-down calls for Auburn. Freeze will send the play in on second down, followed by quarterbacks coach Kent Austin. He is in charge of third-down strategy and will call the play. But Freeze has the right to overrule them both.
After the strategy caught wind on social media, clarification was later asked for during a press conference. Freeze explained his thoughts on how play-calling will be handled.
“Derrick Nix is the offensive coordinator, and he does all the planning and scripting, and is in charge of the game plan,” Freeze told reporters. “But, man, there’s no staff without collaboration on the plan. Offensively or defensively, I reserve the right to say on the call sheet, yeah, I don’t like that one right here. But he does a great job for us.
“Kent leads the third-down plan. But other than that, Nix leads the charge and has the playcalling duties, with me reserving the right to say — I’ll go over when we’re on defense to do head-coaching duties and do the same thing there. I don’t tell DJ a lot, but sometimes I can see what I think offenses are doing. And I’ll say, hey, we need to cloud this.”
More fuel was added when Freeze said on Monday we could see three quarterbacks against Baylor in the season opener. Jackson Arnold is the presumed starter but Auburn is high on what Ashton Daniels and Duece Knight present. Freeze has been high on the quarterback room’s depth since signing the trio this offseason.
So when presented with the circumstances, Kiffin (likely) sarcastically expressed his own opinion on the offensive set-up Monday night. Unfortunately, there is no matchup between Auburn and Ole Miss this season. However, you have to imagine Kiffin will continue to poke fun at the Tigers.
