The Miami Dolphins selected former Texas Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers in the seventh round with the No. 231 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. The former No. 1 overall recruit saw his final season of college football marred by injury, as he battled through an oblique issue, and also dealt with a severe high-ankle sprain.
With a chance to learn from Tua Tagovailoa, and also play in a system that is quite similar to the one at Texas, which saw him throw for 9,128 and 68 touchdowns, Miami seemed like a match made in heaven. However, Ewers' tenure with the Dolphins got off to a "horrific" start in his preseason debut last week against the Chicago Bears, according to The Spun's Andrew Holleran.
The former Texas quarterback completed just 5-of-18 passes for 91 yards, while also losing two fumbles.
With a chance for redemption on Saturday against the Detroit Lions, Ewers bounced back in a way that made his alma mater proud.
Quinn Ewers Draws Praise from Texas After First NFL Touchdown
With the Dolphins trailing 14-7 in the third quarter, Ewers led the offense down the field on a four-play, 36-yard drive that ended with him finding former Missouri/Oklahoma wide receiver, Theo Wease, for a 15-yard touchdown pass.
This marked Ewers' first NFL score of any kind, and also led to the Longhorns showing some support.
"Quinn with his first TD pass 🤘," wrote the team.
The Ewers-Wease connection proved to be a strong one, as the two connected for an eight-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter as well.
Quinn Ewers Is Back In The Race for QB2
Ewers had been shining during training camp practices prior to his first preseason game, with fans and media members alike penciling him as the team's backup to Tagovailoa. However, heading into the first game, he was the third quarterback on the depth chart, and remained there after.
He is locked in a battle with former New York Jets first-round pick Zach Wilson for the right to be Tagovailoa's understudy. While Wilson didn't exactly flash in the first game, he was steady. He also did well on Saturday, completing 15-of-23 passes for 151 yards and a score.
If Ewers can continue to protect the football, lead scoring drives and grow his confidence, he has a real shot to surpass Wilson.
