The Knoxville Smokies lost 5-2 to the Montgomery Biscuits after a week away. After this home stand, there's just one more Covenant Health Park series.
The Knoxville Smokies were unable to extend their four-game winning streak Aug. 19 after a week away, losing 5-2 to the visiting Montgomery Biscuits in their return to Covenant Health Park.
Knoxville, coming off a dominant 13-5 win over the Rocket City Trash Pandas, are nearing the end of their historic first season at the new downtown stadium after spending 25 years playing as the Tennessee Smokies in Kodak.
Following their six-game home stand against the Biscuits, which concludes Aug. 24, the Smokies will have just one more series at Covenant Health Park (Sept. 2-7 vs. Rocket City).
Smokies scoring: The Smokies' recent offensive prowess couldn't translate to the home field Aug. 19, with Knoxville's only runs coming via an Ethan Hearn solo home run in the third inning and a Jordan Nwogu RBI single in the seventh. It was Hearn's sixth home run this season (BJ Murray Jr. leads the Smokies with 18).
The Smokies had just seven hits, eight shy of the 15 they recorded in the final game of the Trash Pandas series, which Knoxville won four games to two.
Biscuits scoring: The Biscuits scored their first two runs in the fourth inning courtesy of a Kenny Piper single. Homer Bush Jr. helped add two more runs for the Biscuits, first with a sacrifice bunt in the seventh inning and then a sacrifice fly in the ninth. Jadher Areinamo's RBI single in the ninth inning scored the fifth and final run.
The Biscuits now lead the six-game series 1-0.
Knoxville Smokies' player of the game: Ethan Hearn
Though Ethan Hearn couldn't repeat his third-inning homer in the ninth, striking out with runners on first and third to end the game, his sixth home run of the season earns him player of the game recognition for setting up the Smokies with the game's first run.
Knoxville Smokies standings in Southern League North
The loss dropped the Smokies to 23-22 in the second half of the season (55-58 overall).
Knoxville is in third place in the Southern League North Division, eight games behind the Birmingham Barons.
