Andy Reid's family is still dealing with an unspeakable tragedy.
The Kansas City Chiefs head coach is gearing up for yet another NFL season. Reid, 67, is entering his 13th season leading the AFC West franchise. He's won three Super Bowls and has appeared in seven straight AFC Championship Games. Reid, who previously coached in Philadelphia, is one of the best head coaches in the history of the game, with a 273-146 career record.
But while Reid has accomplished a lot on the field, he and his family are still dealing with an unspeakable tragedy, that comes up each NFL preseason.
Reid and his family's unspeakable tragedy was the recent focus of Episode 2 of "The Kingdom" on ESPN. The ESPN original series is six parts and focuses on Kansas City's quest for a three-peat.
Back in 2012, Reid and his family suffered an unspeakable tragedy, that they continue to live with today.
Reid's family suffered heartbreak in 2012
Andy Reid's son, Garrett Reid, was serving on the Philadelphia Eagles coaching staff in 2012. Tragically, during training camp, Reid's son was found dead in his room at the team's training camp facility.
Garrett Reid died from an accidental overdose.
ESPN NFL insider Louis Riddick, who was working for the Eagles, still remembers the tragedy to this day.
"I had just seen Garrett the day before," Riddick recalled on "The Kingdom."
"Garrett was one of those stories where you rooted for him because of everything he had been through with drug addiction.
"But he was such a frickin’ likable guy. He had this big personality.
"He was a kid who had an addiction who was trying to kick it and was trying to get his life in order and was living in a dorm room right across the hall from his father at training camp.
"Those demons got him. Simple as that."
The Reid family remains heartbroken
Andy Reid's family continues to be heartbroken in the wake of the devastating, unspeakable tragedy. An autopsy confirmed that Garrett Reid died from overdose.
"These results sadly confirmed what we had expected all along," the family said in a statement.
"We understood that Garrett’s long-standing battle with addiction was going to be difficult.
"He will, however, always have our family’s love and respect for the courage he showed in trying to overcome it.
"In the end, we take comfort in our faith and know that he’s in a better place."
Reid has pushed forward through tragedy
Reid, who would leave Philadelphia following that 2012 season, has become one of the greatest coaches ever in Kansas City.
The Chiefs fell short of a three-peat in 2024, losing to the Eagles in Super Bowl 59, 40-22, but they'll head into the fall as serious contenders.
Kansas City will open the 2025 season on the road, in Brazil, taking on the Chargers.
