- Arch Manning is the starting quarterback at Texas
- The nephew of Eli and Peyton, Arch has been on the bench for the past two seasons
- Arch's grandfather Archie Manning recently made remarks about how long Arch is likely to stay at Texas
Arch Manning is ready to start the season as the starting quarterback at The University of Texas — and he’s setting the record straight about just how long he intends to stay there.
The nephew of Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton and soon-to-be-enshrined Eli, and grandson of Hall of Famer Archie, Manning told reporters on Tuesday, Aug. 19 — in his first comments since mid-July — that his grandfather apologized to him about recent remarks he made to a reporter regarding Arch’s plans to stay at Texas.
"I don't know where he got that from," Arch, 21, told reporters about Archie’s assertion to Texas Monthlythat the younger Manning would stay in Austin for another two years. "He texted me to apologize about that. I'm really just taking it day by day right now."
All of which makes sense for the signal-caller, who has spent the previous two years at UT on the bench behind now-Miami Dolphins rookie Quinn Ewers.
Over the past two seasons, Arch has only played the equivalent of two and half games, where he completed 61 of 90 passes for 939 yards, and had nine touchdowns and two interceptions.

Arch ManningIn a highlight from last year, the No. 1 recruit in the nation (2023) showed off his speed — something not usually attributed to his legendary uncles — in a 67-yard touchdown run in which he reached nearly 21 mph, during a 56-7 rout against UTSA.
His father Cooper — the eldest of the Manning brothers whose football career was sidelined by injury in college — had fun celebrating his son’s success on the field.
“Definitely got his speed from mom,” Cooper, 51, joked on Instagram at the time, alongside a picture of Arch with mom Ellen.
Anytime Arch has entered the game over the past two years at Darrell K Royal Stadium, the 100,000-plus crowd has roared its approval.
On Saturday, Aug. 30, Manning will truly face his first real test in college when the Longhorns travel to Columbus, Ohio to take on defending national champions Ohio State.
But he’s still listening to the advice of his quarterback grandfather, who played for the New Orleans Saints (plus the Minnesota Vikings and Houston Oilers) over his 14 years in the NFL.
"Those hits add up," Arch told reporters on Tuesday. "My grandfather, he's hobbling around these days. He ends every call with, 'Get down or get out of bounds.' "
