Skyy Moore, Devaughn Vele and Harrison Phillips trade grades

Let's run down who won these three NFL August trades.

Three notable trades went down in the NFL on Wednesday, with New Orleans Saints, New York Jets and San Francisco 49ers all adding new players.

Wide receiver Devaughn Vele, defensive tackle Harrison Phillips and wide receiver Skyy Moore are the three players who joined the Saints, Jets and 49ers, respectively.

Those are all recognizable names who should find roles with their new franchises, but did the teams that acquired those guys win or did the teams who traded them get the better deal?

We've graded all three trades and declared a winner, with the Denver Broncos (Vele), Minnesota Vikings (Phillips) and Kansas City Chiefs (Moore) all considered for their roles in said trades.

Saints get: WR Devaughn Vele

Broncos get: 2026 fourth-round pick, 2027 seventh-round pick

Saints grade: The Saints are in a weird spot right now, as the team doesn't have a settled starting quarterback and could be headed for a meaningful rebuild if 2025 doesn't go as hoped. In that regard, trading for a solid receiver in Vele should help the offense find a better footing. In the long run, giving up a fourth rounder that could be pretty high next April feels pretty risky. If you're New Orleans, you have to hope you surpass expectations. If you don't, trading for Vele may not keep you from drafting high and wishing you had that fourth rounder in the spring.

Grade: C

Broncos grade: The Broncos have enough talent at receiver to withstand losing Vele, and snagging a fourth rounder in next year's NFL Draft is a huge win in return. The Broncos should be thrilled to get this kind of compensation.

Jets get: DT Harrison Phillips

Vikings get: 2026 sixth-round pick, a 2027 pick swap

Jets grade: This is a home-run hit for New York. The Jets needed more talent at defensive tackle, and Phillips is a really stout player against the run. Sure, the expectations for New York might not be high this year, but adding a talented veteran like Phillips can help set the right tone during a regime change. Aaron Glenn's defense will be better with a player like Phillips on the roster. If the Jets really falter, he could draw interest at the trade deadline.

Grade: A

Vikings grade: The Vikings didn't really need Phillips with the depth they have at defensive tackle, but they were a better team with him on the roster. This is a curious move, but if Phillips was on the roster bubble, getting a draft pick back isn't a bad outcome. We're a little curious if Minnesota will regret this later in the season, though.

Skyy Moore trade grades

49ers get: WR Skyy Moore, 2027 seventh-round pick

Chiefs get: 2027 sixth-round pick

49ers grade: The 49ers have been decimated at receiver for a variety of reasons, and the team needed relief on the depth chart. However, Moore struggled to make much of an impact with a Kansas City team where quarterback Patrick Mahomes was getting him the ball. While San Francisco might not be done adding to the position, coach Kyle Shanahan has to value Moore more than his career stat line would warrant. The compensation isn't a huge deal in the slightest, but surely the 49ers have another solution up their sleeve to address its wide receiver concerns.

Grade: B

Chiefs grade: The Chiefs could have cut Moore outright at the 53-man deadline, so getting anything in return for a player who has failed to register much of anything in the NFL has to be considered a win. We're sure Kansas City will be happy with its 2027 pick swap, even if it really never got much of anything out of the second-round receiver.
