The Steelers countdown to kickoff is here — and we’re at 17 days until Pittsburgh faces off against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium. In the spirit of the countdown, we’re taking a look at the history of No. 17 and the players who wore it best.
Current Steelers No. 17 wearer: QB Skylar Thompson
Signing with Pittsburgh this past January after three seasons with the Miami Dolphins, QB Skylar Thompson is the current No. 17 wearer on the Steelers roster. While many counted him out early, an injury to rookie QB Will Howard opened the door for more playing time during the preseason opener — where he completed 20-of-28 passes for 233 yards and three touchdowns versus the Jacksonville Jaguars. It wouldn't surprise anyone if Thompson forced his way onto the 53-man roster with more standout performances.
Last five Steelers to wear No. 17:
- Skylar Thompson, 2025–present
- Jamal Agnew, 2024
- Ayo Oyelola, 2024
- Trenton Thompson, 2023
- Anthony Miller, 2021
Best No. 17 in Steelers history: WR Mike Wallace
The greatest Steeler ever to wear No. 17 is none other than WR Mike Wallace. Selected with the 84th overall pick in the third round of the 2009 NFL Draft, Wallace quickly cemented himself as one of Steelers legend Ben Roethlisberger's favorite targets — catching 403 passes for 4,042 yards and 32 touchdowns, the 10th-most receiving scores by a Steelers wide receiver all-time. His lone 2011 Pro Bowl selection doesn't do his career justice, but his strong overall performance during his four years in Pittsburgh is enough to recognize him as the best No. 17 in Steelers history.
