Film Session: Why Josh Conerly Jr. may be ready to start by week one

A film session breaking down Josh Conerly Jr.’s performance against the Cincinnati Bengals

Commanders’ rookie right tackle Josh Conerly Jr.’s performance over the first two weeks of preseason has quickly changed the conversation about him. Heading into joint practices with the New England Patriots, the narrative surrounding Conerly Jr. centered on how his slow development at the time at right tackle was primarily due to his position change from left tackle. This significant shift often requires time for adjustment. Since then, his performance has quickly ascended Conerly Jr. into another conversation, which involves him being the week one starter for Washington. Conerly Jr. starting week one alleviates any uncertainty for Washington about their starting offensive line combinations being a temporary fix to start the season. Second-year lineman Brandon Coleman has returned to practice, according to reports, and has been taking left guard reps. With Andrew Wylie’s versatility, he is very much capable of taking right guard snaps until Sam Cosmi can return from injury.

It’s great to see Conerly emerge for Washington this early, knowing he is learning how to play on the right side after spending his collegiate career at left tackle. He has demonstrated an exceptional level of competitive toughness and athleticism in his preseason film, and shows a good level of comfort in space, particularly in how he processes situations. I previously analyzed some of his reps against the New England Patriots to highlight his strengths in the run game.

In this Trap or Dive film session, I highlight some of his pass and run reps against the Cincinnati Bengals. Specifically, from a technical aspect, but also how he processes and engages with defenders in the run game.
