The Toronto Blue Jays entered Monday night’s matchup against the Pittsburgh Pirates with a 73-52 record, sitting firmly atop the AL East.

However, the game took a concerning turn when star first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. exited early after stretching to make a play at first base.

Shortly after, the Blue Jays replaced him with Ty France and announced that Guerrero was dealing with hamstring tightness. Toronto went on to lose 5-2, suffering its 53rd loss of the season.

Blue Jays Manager John Schneider Provides Update

Still, Guerrero’s injury was the most significant development of the night. Following the game, Blue Jays manager John Schneider—who was also ejected in the seventh inning after arguing a call—provided an important update, revealing that Guerrero will undergo an MRI on his hamstring “to rule anything out” and that the hope is he’ll be ready to return within the coming days.

Hopefully he's good to go in the next day or two," Schneider said postgame.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is central to what the Toronto Blue Jays hope to accomplish this season. Riding their best stretch of the year over the past two months, the Blue Jays currently hold a five-game lead over both the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees in the AL East. Toronto has not captured the division title since 2015.

Having Guerrero in the lineup is nearly a necessity. This season, he is batting .300 across 464 at-bats, with 139 hits, 21 home runs, and 68 RBIs, while carrying a strong .898 OPS.

If he’s forced to miss time, the Blue Jays have formidable stretch. They have two more games against the Pittsburgh Pirates before two three-game series with the Miami Marlins and Minnesota Twins, all leading into a marquee clash against the MLB-best Milwaukee Brewers to close out August.
