Wellington-Centennial football season opener suspended due to inclement weather

Centennial scored on its first two possessions and led 14-0 when the game was called with 9:20 remaining in the second quarter.

PORT ST. LUCIE – The St. Lucie West Centennial High football team did not get off to a good start in its season opener against Wellington.

When the Eagles got on track, only Mother Nature could stop them.

Centennial scored on its first two possessions and led 14-0 when the game was called with 9:20 remaining in the second quarter.

School officials were deciding when to reconvene with the possibility of resuming Saturday in Wellington.

The Eagles were called for two penalties before the opening kickoff. They were assessed an unsportsmanlike penalty before the game began and were offside on the opening kickoff.

Getting the opening kick at their own 49-yard line, the Wolverines lost 10 yards in three plays with a 13-yard sack by Braxton Marseille forcing a punt.

Officials cleared South County Regional Stadium in Port St. Lucie after lightning was detected in the area. St. Lucie West Centennial High led visiting Wellington, 14-0, when the game was stopped with 9 minutes, 20 seconds left in the second quarter.

Centennial, who lost its preseason classic to Jensen Beach High, then drove 65 yards for a touchdown. Quarterback Mason Brown, who went 17-for-24 for 180 yards in last year’s game, a 26-12 Eagles’ victory, got hot late in the drive.

Brown completed four straight passes for 48 yards, the final a 17-yard strike to Emmanuel Dorelus Jr. for the touchdown. Dorelus Jr. ran in the two-point conversion, giving the Eagles an 8-0 advantage.

Wellington, which defeated Suncoast 34-0 in its kickoff classic, lost nine yards on its second possession. Juilian Saget had a 10-yard tackle for a loss, and Brandon Freeman got a sack on third-and-17 to force a punt.

St. Lucie West Centennial High coach Jacob Turay talks on his headset as storm clouds approach South County Regional Stadium in Port St. Lucie. The game between the Eagles and visiting Wellington was postponed early in the second quarter with Centennial leading 14-0.

Getting the ball near midfield, the Eagles needed seven plays to score their second touchdown. Brown connected on three passes during the drive: 6 yards to Marc Johns Jr. and 14 and 21 to Kameron Barber to get the ball to the 5-yard line.

Terriel Harmon broke a tackle in the backfield and a few more on the way to the end zone. The PAT run came up just short putting Centennial up 14-0.

That is when officials sent both teams to the locker room and the fans to their cars in the parking lot. With lightning still in the area, school officials waited 1 hour, 8 minutes before ending Thursday’s action.

Brown was 7-for-8 for 89 yards during Centennial’s two drives. Harmon had 14 yards on five carries.

Both teams finished 4-6 last season and failed to make the postseason.
