Previewing Folsom vs. Grant Union

This is a contest between the top two rated teams in the California Interscholastic Federation Sac-Joaquin Section rankings, according to MaxPreps.

Lyons committed to BYU in June, making the announcement on ESPN’s “The Pat McAfee Show.” He is BYU’s third-highest rated commit all-time and first five-star talent in over 20 years, according to 247 Sports’ composite rankings.

Lyons is rated the No. 21 player nationally and No. 5 quarterback in the 247 Sports composite metric.

Last season, he led the Bulldogs to an 12-2 record that ended in the CIF Division I-AA regional finals, one game short of the state championship game.

Lyons completed 68.1% of his passes during the 2024 season while throwing for 3,011 yards, 46 touchdowns and six interceptions, according to MaxPreps.

His favorite target last season, Jameson Powell, also returns for Folsom for his senior season. Powell, an Ole Miss commit, caught 68 passes for 920 yards and 16 touchdowns in 2024, per MaxPreps.

Folsom enters the matchup ranked No. 24 nationally in the USA Today Sports Super 25 rankings.

Grant Union is the defending state champions at the CIF Division 2-AA level after beating Pacifica 35-28 in the championship last year to cap a 12-3 campaign.

While the Pacers must replace their starting quarterback, he’ll have junior pass catchers Rahzario Edwards and Kody Shabazz back to help power the Grant Union offense. The duo combined for 134 receptions, 2,122 receiving yards and 29 touchdowns a year ago, according to MaxPreps.

This could indicate a shootout is in store for fans tuning in.
