Barcelona captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen has joined other La Liga captains in signing a statement against the decision to move the Villarreal vs Barcelona fixture to Miami.

According to SPORT, the German goalkeeper was among the first to add his name to the declaration issued by the Association of Spanish Footballers (AFE).

The statement denounces what the players call a “lack of respect” from the League and Federation, who decided to relocate the game without consulting those directly involved.

What is the issue?

The captains of every top-flight club have united on this issue, highlighting how this sudden move affects both sporting preparations and the lives of the players.

Villarreal captain Gerard Moreno also signed, making the stance even stronger since both teams set to play in the United States are directly represented.

It is important to note that Ter Stegen’s decision to sign has nothing to do with his recent injury or his long-term future at Barcelona.

Instead, it is an act of solidarity with fellow captains, stressing that players should be part of such crucial discussions before decisions are made.

Demanding transparency from La Liga and RFEF

The AFE and First Division captains held a meeting last Thursday after the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced plans on 11 August to request UEFA and FIFA approval for a La Liga match to be held outside Spain this season.

During the meeting, AFE demanded detailed information about the plan in order to inform players and gather their feedback.

However, the League distanced itself from responsibility, stating it would only provide updates as the authorisation process moved forward.

The captains argue that relocating a domestic fixture abroad is more than a simple logistical change.

It alters pre-match routines, impacts agreed rest schedules, and forces players to travel internationally for what should be a home league game. For them, not being consulted shows a worrying lack of respect.
