The 2024 season for the Colorado Buffaloes was their best since 2016 (10-4), as they won nine games and boasted just their second ever Heisman Trophy Winner in program history (Rashaan Salaam in 1994 and Travis Hunter in 2024).
The Buffaloes won big games against Texas Tech, Baylor and Utah and tied for the Big 12 Regular Season title with a 7-2 conference record.
Although the program seems to be on an upward trajectory (it has improved on its win total in both seasons of the Deion Sanders era), the 2025 season could be a harsh return to the basement for the Buffs in the post Shedeur/Hunter era. ESPN’s Joe Fortenbaugh agreed with this sentiment on Friday morning’s edition of Get Up and projected Colorado to go under 5.5 wins this season.
“Less but I wouldn’t be aggressive with it,” Fortenbaugh said. “It’s a sharp number. It’s hard to be bullish on a team like this when you take as much production from last year’s team off the roster. Great quarterback in (Shedeur) Sanders, Heisman Trophy/two-way player/No. 3 overall pick in Travis Hunter. I’ve got them as underdogs in eight of 12 games. There’s some coin flips in there but I lean to less here on 5.5 wins.”
Joey Galloway agrees on Colorado taking a step back this season
This season, Colorado plays a loaded conference schedule featuring three preseason top-25 ranked teams (No. 11 Arizona State, No. 17 Kansas State and No. 22 Iowa State) and opens its season against Georgia Tech (received 63 votes in preseason AP Poll).
“I think that people have these lofty expectations that are sort of unfair,” ESPN’s Joey Galloway said on Thursday morning’s edition of Get Up. “He lost the best player in college football in Travis Hunter, lost his starting quarterback (Sanders). And so, they’re going to take a step back.”
“You’ve got to win the games you’re supposed to win. You’ve got to always do that. And then be competitive in the other games. When you have ranked opponents, when you have opponents at home, you have to be competitive in those games. You go back to before he got there, nobody was talking about Colorado at all. We wouldn’t be having this discussion on Get Up with you right now. So, they just need to win the games they’re supposed to and be competitive in those other games against ranked opponents.”
The Buffaloes open their 2025 campaign against Georgia Tech on Aug. 29. Kick-off is scheduled for 8:00 PM on ESPN.
