Fall camp is over and game week is here. Nebraska is less than a week out from the season-opener against Cincinnati. On Friday, Matt Rhule offered an update on where Nebraska stands from a health standpoint coming out of fall camp.

Defensive back Mario Buford is out in concussion protocol but Rhule noted they “hope to have him back.” Wide receiver Roman Mangini is out “right now” following offseason groin surgery, he should be back “within a couple weeks.” Freshman linebacker Pierce Mooberry is out with a hamstring strain, as is sophomore defensive lineman Gabe Moore, who transferred in from Mississippi State. Sophomore linebacker Vincent Shavers Jr. is day-to-day with a lingering hamstring strain.”

“If you guys know V9, I wouldn’t count him out,” Rhule said.

Redshirt freshman offensive lineman Gibson Pyle is out for the year with a knee injury, according to Rhule. Inside Nebraska’s Steve Marik broke down what Pyle’s absence means for the offensive line.

What Pyle’s injury means for Nebraska’s offensive line

Pyle was a three-star recruit in the 2024 class out of Houston (Texas) Klein Cain who played in the All-American Bowl. He redshirted his true freshman season in 2024 and played in one game, the season-opener against UTEP.

During brief open practice periods media were allowed to view in fall camp, Pyle, an interior lineman, consistently worked with the second-team offensive line as its right guard. The rest of the second-team interior included sophomores Sam Sledge at center and Jason Maciejczakat left guard.

Others in coach Donovan Raiola’s room now have an opportunity to back up projected senior starting right guard Rocco Spindler. There are several inexperienced, but high-potential options.

“I think going into training camp, the whole overall unit has been the best since we’ve been here,” Raiola said last Friday. “I was talking to Coach (Aaron) Coeling, my assistant, the other day, and we haven’t seen too many units that we’ve been around that’s been this deep, from the top group to the last guy on the roster.”
