Utah’s No. 1 ranked team, No. 12 nationally Corner Canyon Chargers travels down to the Sunshine State to take on the West Broward Bobcats in the fourth annual Broward County Classic High School Football Showcase Friday evening.
As the classic heads into its second day, this matchup will be the first of three more before the highly anticipated finale on Saturday. Let’s take a look at some players to watch in today’s game.
Chargers to Watch
Corner Canyon came right out of the gates red hot in a 45-0 rout of a good Bingham squad. Now the Chargers shift their focus to this evening when they play a talented West Broward club. With a bevy of talent from last season, the Chargers remain one of the top teams in the country.
QB Helaman Casuga: I think we’d be foolish to not start this off with the Texas A&M commitment himself in Casuga. The signal caller had one of the country’s top quarterback performances, completing 13 of 18 for 284 passing yards and two touchdowns. Casuga threw for 1,898 yards and 21 touchdowns in 2024.
RB Weston Briggs: With every great quarterback is usually not too far away from him, a pretty good running back. Briggs displayed his abilities in the victory over Bingham by rushing for 151 yards on 14 carries.
WR Kai Meza: No Jerome Myles? No problem for the Chargers as Casuga’s new top target is the Minnesota three-star commitment as Meza caught six passes for 145 yards and two touchdowns last week versus Bingham.
IOL Esun Tafa: Probably the most key player to the Corner Canyon offense is Tafa, a four-star USC commitment, leading the offensive line. Tafa anchors a stout offensive line that blocked their way to the Chargers compiling nearly 600 yards of offense last week.
Bobcats to Watch
West Broward saw themselves begin to make waves down in South Florida ahead of the 2024 season and now have a shot to do it on a national scale against Corner Canyon. The roster is talented, featuring multiple Power 4 recruits and head into this afternoon prepared to attempt and pull off a major upset.
RB Amos Bradford: If you want to beat Corner Canyon, you’re going to need to score some points and control the clock. That’s where the junior running back, a Toledo commitment, comes very handy for the Bobcats. Bradford will be one of the focal points for the West Broward attack. Bradford rushed for 1,227 yards last season.
CB A’mir Sears: Having one of the better overall defensive secondaries in South Florida when it comes to talent, the sophomore cornerback was just recently ranked a four-star talent. Sears heads up a young, but solid defensive backfield for West Broward.
OT Alejandro Schmitt: Leading the way for Bradford and crew running behind West Broward’s offensive line is Schmitt. The senior offensive tackle is committed to Florida Atlantic and will need to help the Bobcats wrangle in the Chargers’ defensive front seven.
ATH Aden Johnson: Standing at 6-foot-5, 200 pounds, Johnson will be used in a multitude of ways when the Bobcats take on Chargers this evening. Whether contributing on offense or defense, the sophomore could be a game changer.
