Jaeden Roberts was held out of Alabama’s second scrimmage last week and head coach Kalen DeBoer provided the latest on the offensive tackle. As of now, it doesn’t look like he’s any closer to returning to action.

Roberts recently suffered a concussion. So, as DeBoer confirmed, going through the protocol is the only process and it’s anyone’s guess on how long it will take.

Roberts is a big returning piece to the Alabama offensive line, slated to stay at the right guard position. Alabama will be losing a key interior piece on the other side, as Tyler Booker — who played left guard — is now in the NFL playing for the Dallas Cowboys.

“He hasn’t taken any team reps or anything right now,” DeBoer said. Still making that progress through that protocol that we’re on with his injury.”

As a member of the Class of 2021, Roberts was a four-star recruit out of Houston (Texas) North Shore, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking. He was the No. 35 overall prospect in the state, the No. 14 interior offensive lineman in the class and the No. 219 overall prospect in the class.

“Two guys that didn’t scrimmage today, Jaeden and James, same as last week,” DeBoer said last week. “James has been working through and building up. Feel good about the progress he’s had in the week of practice, and with it being live, needed to hold back there. But he’s getting closer by the day.

“Jaeden has a concussion. I’ll just tell you what it is. And he’s going through the protocol of that. And so, hasn’t done anything from a team standpoint, starting to work back into that protocol, which included being out there today but not to participate in the scrimmage.”

As it stands now, Alabama and DeBoer are getting ready for Florida State next week. The season opener is rapidly approaching and whether or not Roberts is back on the field, DeBoer wants to make sure the Crimson Tide are ready.

“Introing into Florida State here, our first reps. We obviously have done a lot of homework and different meeting rooms and things like that might have snuck some peaks on film, but as far as coordinated efforts in practice today was where we started that. So both sides of the ball, all phases of the game, so that was good.

“And then just an update because I guess I never really have had a chance to address you guys, Jam, you know, his injury, a little more significant than what I thought when I was there for the press conference with you guys last. I found out more information afterwards. So he’ll be out. We’ll go week by week, but he’ll be out for the first game for sure and we’ll play it from there.”
