Iowa State coach Matt Campbell was furious with officials during the second quarter against Kansas State, following a penalty. The Cyclones were penalized with the rarer defensive delay of game penalty.

Safe to say, Campbell wasn’t a fan of the call. Once he heard the ruling, he went ballistic on the sideline, trying to get an explanation. In a 7-7 ball game, every moment was important.

Luckily for Iowa State, Kansas State’s Joe Jackson’s 17 yard run a few plays later ended in a fumble recovered by Drew Surges. The Cyclones took over and were in the process of driving midway through the second quarter. Campbell’s reaction can be seen below.

Campbell’s crew came up empty on the drive in the end. Kyle Konrady missed a 49-yard field goal in the rain, as the Ireland weather wasn’t too kind to either team in the first half.

Matt Campbell already in midseason form

Iowa State started the season No. 22 while Kansas State was No. 17. It was a massive game to start the 2025 season. This matchup certainly had major Big 12 implications.

“I think certainly as we get into this game week, that will probably rev itself up,” Campbell said leading up to the game. “The reality of it is if you don’t worry about yourself, then you’ve got real problems. And my number one focus, and I hope our kids’ number one focus, has been really in the mirror. We don’t know what K-State’s going to do. It’s a first game. You’ve got no idea. They’ve got a new offensive coordinator. They’ve played multiple defenses for the last four to five years. And so, you’re playing a first game, and I don’t care who your opponent would be.

“There better be great focus on you. And I think that it’s easy to get caught up in all that. We certainly respect that, and we’re certainly excited for the opportunity. But really the focus has been internal; we’ve got a lot to prove to ourselves fundamentally. We’ve got a lot to prove to ourselves on building this year’s team. We’ve got a lot of questions we have to answer. And, no matter what they do or how they do it or what environment or what continent we’re on or wherever we’re at, we have to play a 60-minute football game.”
