Manchester United defender Luke Shaw had shared a fascinating admission about the present squad.

United looking to kick on after Arsenal loss

United opened their 2025/26 Premier League campaign with a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal last weekend.

Inspired by fresh recruits Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, Ruben Amorim’s men impressed with a spirited display, though a goal proved elusive.

But, confidence within the camp remains high and there is optimism that a first win will come during Sunday’s meeting with Fulham.

Shaw was on the pitch for 80 minutes against Arsenal, slotting on the left side of a three-man defence also consisting of Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt.

The trio performed well and will be hoping to start together yet again at Craven Cottage.

Ahead of the contest, Shaw spoke to club media and revealed his personal ambitions for the season. He also shared some fascinating insights, insisting that the current crop of players is the best he has seen since joining the Red Devils from Southampton in 2014.

Shaw remarks

The England international remarked, “I’ve said it a lot to be honest and I’ve been here a long while now. I have been in a lot of different squads, but for me personally, I can only speak on my opinion. I think this is the best squad I’ve been involved in.”

“It’s not just on the pitch but also off the pitch. I think the environment’s extremely important on what we create and [also] the atmosphere around the place.”

“It’s a really happy place at the moment and credit to the new signings as well. They’ve definitely brought a lot of joy and happiness and of course for Matheus [Cunha], loudness in the squad. But, you know we welcome it with open arms and we’re really happy with how things are in, like we call it, an environment, and at the moment it’s good.”

Shaw added about his fitness, “I feel really good and also really happy. I think obviously, especially after last year, it was a really tough year, not just physically, but mentally as well. It was really tough but I am now in a really good place now. I [am trying to] put that behind me and just focus on the things I need to do now.”

“And for me that’s to stay fit and keep on the pitch. Like I said, I feel really happy and I’m really enjoying the role that the manager has me doing at the moment. So long may that continue.”

Asked about his targets, the 30-year-old answered, “I normally have different targets I set, but I think this season for me, of course going on the back of last season, how disappointing it was and the amount I played.”

“I think the most important thing for me this season is to be fit for as many games as I possibly can for the team. [I want to] help the team out as much as I can. I think last year it hurt me quite a lot because I didn’t feel like I managed to do that last season.”

“It was tough to take. So I think I set targets really this season to be available as much as I can and to help the team I think that’s a starting target and I think there’ll be more and more targets I set myself – especially for what we want to achieve as a team.”

“But I think the main one for me at the moment is just to stay fit and give the manager options and to play me.”

Fulham vs. United kicks off at 16:30 BST.
