A lot has been said about Leigh Diffey and his accent during NASCAR races. Mike Joy thinks that fans need to learn their history. The longtime broadcaster and voice of stock car racing had a few things to say about his NBC counterpart recently.
Leigh Diffey is a polarizing announcer. Fans love him or hate him. For whatever reason, there are folks out there who can’t get over his voice. The Australian accent isn’t for everyone, it seems.
Speaking to The Daytona Beach News Journal, Mike Joy had great things to say about Diffey. He also brought up previous voices in the sport such as David Hobbs and Jackie Stewart. The Englishman and Scotsman were fixtures of early NASCAR racing from the booth.
“I’ve known and worked with Leigh for more than a decade,” Joey said to the News Journal. “He’s always brought an unbridled enthusiasm to his announcing that I don’t think any other commentator can match.
“Better yet, his level of study and preparation is equal or better than anyone in our profession. His love for the sport and dedication to it puts him at the top of his craft.”
Those are kind words from a longtime figure in the sport. Mike Joy and his time at FOX have helped define eras of NASCAR at this point. Decades of work. If he gives Leigh Diffey a thumbs up, who is anyone else to comment?
Mike Joy continues to deliver NASCAR finishes to fans
Of course, Mike Joy is still going with FOX. Together with Clint Bowyer and Kevin Harvick, he has helped bring NASCAR fans the first third or half of the season for years now. Harvick is great with Joy and Bowyer. It has been a booth that has come together in the last year.
Meanwhile, Leigh Diffey is working alongside Jeff Burton and Steve Letarte in the NBC booth. Then there are the Prime Video and TNT Sports broadcasters – Letarte, Dale Earnhardt Jr., and Adam Alexander.
Right now, NASCAR has a wealth of broadcast talent, both old and new. There are veterans of the sport, newer names, and a lot of differences in how the races are presented. A little bit of something for everybody.
Those kind words from Mike Joy are great to see. No need for these broadcasters to bring each other down. Leigh Diffey delivered another fantastic call at Daytona on Saturday night, too. Proving once again, the critics and haters are wrong.
