The Washington Commanders and wide receiver Terry McLaurin agreed to a new contract extension, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. McLaurin was previously holding-in during training camp for a new deal.
Insider Jordan Schultz reported the terms and it’s a big deal. McLaurin reportedly signed a three-year, $96 million deal.
McLaurin has played his entire career, going back to 2019, with the Commanders. That’s included going to the Pro Bowl twice in the last three seasons. Last season, one of those Pro Bowl seasons, he was phenomenal with 82 receptions for 1,096 yards and 13 touchdowns. That was a career high in touchdowns.
In 2022, McLaurin signed a three-year, $71 million contract with a $28 million signing bonus. Since then, wide receivers have seen a boost in their contracts. In the case of DK Metcalf, who ESPN”s Jeremy Fowler suggested was being used as a model, his contract was signed this past offseason for five years and $150 million.
“Washington, I’m told, has gotten some calls about McLaurin,” Fowler said, prior to the contract extension. “There’s some interest league-wide. They have no interest in trading him still. So, this is a classic standoff as we’re about to see.”
As part of his initial dispute, McLaurin, who has been frustrated by this and didn’t report to camp for a week, also requested a trade on July 31st. However, that didn’t go anywhere either, with Washington expecting to have him on the team for this season.
Beyond the off-field updates, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero then added an on-field one for McLaurin, who Washington activated off the PUP list last week after he’d been dealing with an ankle issue. It was noted that his activation was not related to his contract, but it does make way for a possible return to practice towards the end of training camp for the Commanders.
