The Colts and Vikings made a trade on Monday.
Cam Bynum reunited with Mekhi Blackmon after Colts-Vikings trade originally appeared on The Sporting News
Cam Bynum left Minnesota in free agency to sign a four-year, $60 million contract with the Indianapolis Colts to become Lou Anarumo’s starting free safety.
24 weeks to the day later, Bynum is back with one of his former teammates with the Vikings as the Colts traded their 2026 sixth-round pick to Minnesota in exchange for cornerback Mekhi Blackmon on Monday.
Blackmon, a former third-round selection out of USC in 2023, gets a fresh start after missing the entirety of 2024 with a torn ACL. Prior to that, he started three of the 15 games he appeared in as a rookie, recording an interception and eight passes defended. He played in all three of Minnesota’s preseason matchups, totalling 117 snaps.
Despite being in a new place, Blackmon has Bynum to lean on as he learns a new defense. While he doesn’t figure to be a regular starter— especially after the Colts get a little healthier— Blackmon will still provide sufficient depth if the injuries begin to get even more out of hand.
Should he find himself on the field more than originally anticipated, having Bynum right by his side will be a welcomed sight for the 5-foot-11, 178 pound cornerback.
As far as roster selection goes, the acquisition proves to be significant as there are under 24 hours until Aug. 26 at 4:00 p.m. E.T, the 53-man roster deadline. Does Blackmon take the place of a current Colt who’s on the roster bubble? Or does Indy decide to keep a seventh corner (general manager Chris Ballard tends to roster six) to favor Lou Anarumo’s 3-5-2 defensive scheme?
Only time will tell how Blackmon affects the selection process. Either way, both he and Bynum will likely be relieved to have a new teammate who they have pre-established chemistry with.
