Miami Dolphins reveal initial 53-man roster: Breaking down depth chart

The Miami Dolphins finalized their 53-man roster on Tuesday, Aug. 26. Let's break it all down. Here's what stands out.

MIAMI GARDENS ― The Miami Dolphins have finalized a 53-man roster for 2025.

Here is who made it, by position on the depth chart.

Here's a look at the initial Dolphins' 53-man roster and depth chart

Quarterbacks (3)

Tua Tagovailoa, Zach Wilson, Quinn Ewers

Quinn Ewers is a worthwhile developmental project. Zach Wilson was up and down in the spring and summer, but he has far more upside than any of the backup quarterbacks who filled in for Tagovailoa in 2025.

Wide Receivers (6)

Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, Malik Washington, Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, Dee Eskridge, Tahj Washington

The Dolphins have good depth at receiver. Both Washingtons make the cut. Malik has emerged as Miami's No. 3 receiver. Westbrook-Ikhine must prove to be a devastating blocker in the run game. Hill and Waddle are trying to regain 2023 form.

Running Backs (3)

De'Von Achane, Jaylen Wright, Ollie Gordon

Jaylen Wright is expected to be out "weeks" according to coach Mike McDaniel. The Dolphins could surely add a running back to complement Achane and Gordon for the first few games. Achane has been banged up, so this puts pressure on Gordon, a rookie.

Fullback (1)

Alec Ingold

Pro Bowler.

Offensive Line (8)

Patrick Paul, Jonah Savaiinaea, Aaron Brewer, James Daniels, Austin Jackson, Larry Borom, Daniel Brunskill, Kion Smith

The Dolphins are sure to comb the waiver wire for an upgrade at the backup positions, particularly tackle. Miami needs Jackson back for Week 1. And Miami needs Liam Eichenberg and/or Andrew Meyer to be highly capable when they regain health.

Tight end (3)

Darren Waller, Julian Hill, Tanner Conner

Pharaoh Brown was cut. We'll see when Waller returns to practice and how he looks. They're running out of time, aren't they? Conner can provide some pass-catching insurance for Waller, if he is slow to round into form.

Defensive Line (6)

Zach Sieler, Kenneth Grant, Jordan Phillips, Benito Jones, Matthew Butler, Zeek Biggers

Matthew Butler and Zeek Biggers made the cut over Matt Dickerson. The Dolphins have a very strong front seven, potentially one of the best front sevens in the NFL. The (new) Jordan Phillips is very strong and should gain more and more playing time as the season progresses.

Linebacker/Edge (9)

Jaelan Phillips, Bradley Chubb, Chop Robinson, Jordyn Brooks, Tyrel Dodson, Willie Gay, Matthew Judon, K.J. Britt, Cam Goode

Cam Goode made it over Quinton Bell, presumably for special teams reasons. If Phillips, Chubb, Robinson and Judon stay healthy, who could possibly produce a better four-man pass rush rotation? Elite, elite, elite.

Cornerback (6)

Storm Duck, Jack Jones, Jason Marshall Jr., Ethan Bonner, Cam Smith, Isaiah Johnson

Is Rasul Douglas enough of an addition to settle down a Dolphins cornerback room that lost talented and mercurial cornerback Jalen Ramsey? He'll be officially added to the roster soon. Duck has actually been the most solid Miami corner this offseason. Is the rookie Marshall, Jr. ready to start in the slot? Miami is skewing younger this season, which is not necessarily bad.

Safety (6)

Minkah Fitzpatrick, Ifeatu Melifonwu, Ashtyn Davis, Elijah Campbell, Dante Trader Jr., Jordan Colbert

Jevon Holland was paid by the Giants. Jordan Poyer is gone. Patrick McMorris did not make the cut. Fitzpatrick is by far Miami's best defensive back and an outstanding team leader. The Dolphins will hope at least a few of the other safeties can stay healthy and play up to their athleticism.

Special Teams (2)

Jake Bailey, Joe Cardona

Joe Cardona has replaced Blake Ferguson. Jake Bailey won the punting battle. The Dolphins will need to add a kicker in the wake of Jason Sanders' injury.
