Although we are just two days away from the Army Black Knights 2025 season football opener, we make a brief and momentary shift from the gridiron as GoBlackKnights.com Podcast Host Joe Iacono does it again. Joe has an insightful chat with Colonel David A. Bowlus, who is a 1993 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy, currently serves as the Senior Chaplain at West Point.
Originally commissioned as an Armor officer after his graduation, he served for over five years before leaving active duty in 1998 to pursue seminary studies at Alliance Theological Seminary in Nyack, New York. Inspired by the events of September 11, he returned to the Army in 2002 as a chaplain.
Over the subsequent years, he undertook numerous deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, and served in various capacities including as chaplain for the 75th Ranger Regiment, U.S. Forces Korea, U.S. Army Special Operations Command, the 101st Airborne Division, and U.S. Army Forces Command .
In his new role at West Point, Col. Bowlus emphasizes the vital importance of spiritual fitness in developing future military leaders. He regards this appointment as one of the greatest honors of his career and hopes that his journey will inspire other young leaders from Northwest Ohio—and beyond—to consider military service and aspire to attend the Academy .
He is married to Meridee Bowlus and is father to two children, Andrew—also a West Point graduate and currently a Combat Engineer—and Savannah .
