Bayern Munich's Harry Kane did not dwell too much on his first missed penalty in an official match in almost three years during a 3-2 German Cup win at third division Wehen Wiesbaden. Bayern Munich's Harry Kane did not dwell too much on his first missed penalty in an official match in almost three years during a 3-2 German Cup win at third division Wehen Wiesbaden.
England captain Kane had converted 31 times in a row from the spot since missing in the 2022 World Cup quarter-final against France, before Wehen Wiesbaden's outstanding goalkeeper Florian Stritzel ended the streak on Wednesday night.
"It had to happen one day. Today was one of those days," Kane said post-match.
Kane put Bayern ahead in the 16th minute by sending Stritzel the wrong way on a first penalty. Stritzel chose to dive to his right again on the second spot kick in the 76th and was successful this time.
"It was my second penalty in the game, the goalkeeper made a really good save. It was a good height for a goalkeeper, he did it beautifully," Kane said.
"It is always a bit difficult if you have two in one match. It is difinitely something I need to work on."
Kane had skied a penalty against his former club Tottenham Hotspur in a pre-season test. But Wednesday's attempt wasn't badly executed.
Bayern's Joshua Kimmich agreed that "the goalkeeper simply saved it very well" to keep the score 2-2 at the time, before Kane headed a stoppage time winner.
Stritzel said that he had been prepared for a penalty situation.
"I saw his record once or twice. I went through it with my goalkeeper coach a few times - and we trained exactly this ball a few times," he said.
"I know that when Harry Kane shoots you must go into the corner with maximum tension, and have a little luck that he shoots there."
