Manchester United are close to getting rid of Alejandro Garnacho.
Ruben Amorim’s men delivered another frustrating performance, as United suffered an early League Cup exit on penalties to Grimsby Town.
Much has been written about the follies of Amorim’s back three formation. However, the defeat on Wednesday night was more to do with the mentality of the squad.
The Portuguese tactician has been trying to reset the dressing room culture at United since his appointment in November, having pushed high-profile names like Marcus Rashford and Garnacho on the fringes of the senior team.
Rashford has already been shipped out to Barcelona and the Argentina international is now closing in on a move to London.
Nkunku’s exit to accelerate Garnacho deal
According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Chelsea are “expected to finalise” a deal for Garnacho after resolving Christopher Nkunku’s future.
Nkunku is set to join AC Milan in a deal worth €42m. His imminent exit should bolster Chelsea’s transfer budget as well as open up a space on the left flank for Garnacho.
It has been previously reported that Chelsea offered the Frenchman to United in their bid to sign the Argentine left-winger early this summer. However, the Red Devils had no interest in any swap deal.
Jacobs adds that an agreement between Chelsea and United is “close” for the 21-year-old, who fell out of favour under Amorim due to his attitude.
Recently, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming the Blues are close to signing Garnacho “in a deal worth up to £40m.”
Manchester United should offload more passengers
In light of United’s poor start to the new season, the club’s hierarchy should try to further shake up the squad before the window shuts.
Andre Onana returned to the starting lineup and was at fault for both Grimsby goals. Altay Bayındır has been equally disastrous this season. As such, United would do well to transform their goalkeeping department.
It has been widely reported that United are in talks to sign Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp. Meanwhile, Onana has been linked with a shock loan exit in recent days.
