HUSKERS FOOTBALL Game Day: Some Final Fall Camp Notes

Here’s some of the final words from players and coaches this week ahead of the Battle of Arrowhead.

  • The kicker battle has been a notable one with the Huskers retaining both Tristan Alvano and John Hohl, but then bringing in transfer Kyle Cunanan from Cal. Matt Rhule confirmed Cunanan will handle the place kicker duties while either Alvano or Hohl could be kicking off.
  • The offensive tackle starters are set up to be a game day decision with the top five at both slots carrying the OR designation.
  • Dana Holgorsen got a chuckle when asked if that meant we would see multiple players at left and right on Thursday – “That’s sort of what ‘OR’ means.”
  • While admitting game day jitters are normal, Holgorsen said they are ready for a real game and have “covered every situation known to man”.
  • Although it wasn’t a game day question, when asked about Tom Fidone and John Bullock making NFL rosters, Rhule was effusive in his praise for both – Fidone for repeatedly overcoming severe injuries and Bullock from rising to an NFL roster after being basically “a forgotten player” when he arrived.
  • Rhule’s quote of the day: “The process is undefeated for those who won’t be defeated.”
  • Dylan Raiola got chuckles when asked if the team was ready for a real game: “I know our defense is ready to hit a quarterback – and not just this one.”
  • John Butler confirmed a linebacker on the field will be wearing the communications mic in this first season of those being used on the field.
  • Let’s remember to credit Michigan’s cheating for this being implemented. On the other hand, this should rid the sidelines of backup quarterbacks waving those ridiculous 4-block signs with Wile E. Coyote, a box of Cocoa Puffs, a nuclear strike and Taylor Swift.
  • Rhule said he is absolutely expecting home game intensity in Arrowhead today.
  • I couldn’t help but get a little emotional and fired up when Henry Lutovsky called being voted a Husker captain by his teammates the highest honor he had ever been awarded.
  • (Give me a sec.)
  • Holgorsen, when asked about Cincinnati DT Dontay “The Godfather” Corleone, joked “he retired our center” when Dana was the HC at Houston. How did he do that? By single-handedly three-and-outing the Cougars on the opening drive.
  • John Butler, former Buffalo Bills defensive backfield coach, said they weren’t “really cheering for our defense” after being asked about his previous trips to Arrowhead.
  • Finally, if you were wondering what the team pre-game movie is? Superman.
  • Just perfect – “Krypto? Get the toy!”
