A new school year means new teachers, new classes, new friends.

In the VHSL, every two years a new football season often means new opponents.

There are many reasons why teams schedule different foes, beginning with schools that change districts and are required to pick up opponents from those respective leagues. Class 4 Gloucester, in joining the Bay Rivers District in 2025, has nine new opponents on its schedule.

Class 2 King William, which has a mutual agreement with the Tidewater District that does not require the Cavaliers to play the other district schools, has eight new opponents in 2025.

Some scheduling changes are made for competitive reasons, either because a team might want a more difficult challenge or an easier one. Some scheduling changes are made because of travel.

Still some changes are made because teams want to play an opponent it never has played or they want to go to a location — often out-of-state — that involves an interesting trip.

INTRASTATE

* Amherst County at Sherando, Aug. 28 — These two Region 4D schools have played each other three times, but never in August. The first two matchups were December state championship games, a 56-12 Amherst win in 1995 and a 56-10 victory by the Lancers in 2007. The most recent game was Sherando’s 49-15 triumph in 2013 in a first-round playoff game en route to the final where the Warriors again surrendered 56 points in a 56-14 loss to Dinwiddie.

* Oscar Smith at Warwick, Sept. 5 — Warwick certainly isn’t ducking anyone. The Raiders picked up a game against Mallard Creek (N.C.) before hosting reigning Class 6 state champion Oscar Smith in Week 2. The last meeting between the two Tidewater schools was in 2003, and the all-time series stands at 7-7-1.

* Maury at Varina, Sept. 5 — These two have met just once, a 17-14 victory by Maury in the 2019 Class 5 state semifinals. Maury brings a 30-game overall win streak into the season since a 33-19 loss to Highland Springs in the 2022 Class 5 state final.

* Hampton at Lake Taylor, Sept. 5 — These perennial 757 powers have never scheduled each other … until now. All six previous meetings were in playoff games with Lake Taylor holding a 3-2 lead. Hampton won 36-7 in the most recent game in 2010.

* Dinwiddie at Highland Springs, Sept. 12 — The two Richmond-area schools have played each other just twice in the regular-season with Highland Springs winning both by a combined six points. The Springers lead the overall series 4-0 with the most recent matchup in 2012.

* Altavista at Lord Botetourt, Sept. 12 — Along with season-opening opponent Rye Cove on Aug. 21, Altavista is one of two 2025 foes that Lord Botetourt had never played in football. Changing opponents is nothing new for Botetourt. The Cavaliers have played 23 different non-district teams over the last five two-year cycles.

* Louisa County at Matoaca, Sept. 19 — Louisa figures it is finally time to try again. The Lions last played Matoaca in 1975, losing 6-0. That is also the score of the all-time series, which began in 1966 with the first of six victories by the Warriors.

* Glenvar at Northside, Sept. 19 — Somehow, these two Roanoke County schools have played each other just once, a 40-0 Northside victory in 1969 in Glenvar’s third year as a program. That game was held at Salem Municipal Field, now known as Kiwanis Park and used only for baseball.

* Radford at William Byrd, Oct. 3 — Radford and Byrd first played football against each other in 1928, but this will be the first meeting in 36 years. VHSL coaching legend Norman Lineburg, who died in July, led both programs. He coached Byrd from 1962-64 before serving 37 seasons at Radford where his teams won 283 games and two VHSL championships.

INTER-CITY GAMES

* Graham at Bluefield (W.Va.), Aug. 29. The 97th edition of the battle for Bluefield will be the only game Graham plays in 2025 at Mitchell Stadium. The reigning VHSL Class 2 champions are staying on the Virginia side of the line for their five “home” games. The G-Men are playing one neutral-site game apiece at Tazewell and Richlands. The other three will be held at a new turf field at the high school. The new field will have temporary bleachers, and it does not have lights, meaning Saturday afternoon dates for games against Marion (Oct. 4), Virginia High (Oct. 18) and Lebanon (Oct. 25).

* Tennessee High (Tenn.) at Virginia High, Sept. 19. The two city schools on opposite sides of State Street in Bristol have collided 110 times in a series that began in 1911, but they have not met since the pre-COVID 19 era in 2019. With 21 losses in the last 22 games to its larger rival, Virginia High is putting its pride back on the line.

INTERSTATE GAMES

Warwick’s game vs. Mallard Creek and the resumption of the V-T Game as it is known in Bristol are among the notable out-of-state games for VHSL schools.

Here are a few more:

* Liberty Christian at Ironton (Ohio), Aug. 30. LCA’s 28-game win streak is on the line in a big way. The Bulldogs travel to the Buckeye State to face and Ironton team that is the Ohio Division 5 reigning state champion. The last time a VHSL team played a school from Ohio was only two years ago when Dinwiddie played Glenville High in Cleveland and fell 36-13.

* Heritage-Lynchburg at Bridgeport (W.Va.), Sept 5. This looks like a tough assignment for Heritage. Bridgeport is coming off a 14-0 season and a Class AAA championship in West Virginia when the Indians outscored their opponents 801-112.

* Jefferson Forest at Mount Airy (N.C.), Sept. 12. The town that is the basis for the fictional “Andy Griffith Show” really should be playing Floyd County, but Jefferson Forest will do. They call it football in Mount Airy, where the Granite Bears are 57-3 in the last four seasons with two Class 1AA state titles.

* Varina at Grimsley (N.C.), Oct. 3. Varina’s coaching staff must be expecting a big year. The Blue Devils open at 2025 Region 5C finalist William Fleming, followed by the showdown with Maury. Grimsley takes a back seat to no one. The Greensboro team is coming off a 16-0 season and a state title in Class 4A, the highest in North Carolina.

EIGHT-MAN FOOTBALL

Here’s one involving a team from Washington, D.C. traveling to rural Washington, Virginia.

* Model (D.C.) at Rappahannock County, Sept. 5. Model’s full designation is Model Secondary School for the Deaf, and that’s all anyone needs to know. There are a number of Virginia school’s playing the eight-man version of football, including VHSL member Chincoteague, but there has been no Deaf School in Virginia playing football since VSDB stopped almost 40 years ago. Model has an eight-game schedule, concluding with an Oct. 24 game against California School for the Deaf-Riverside, a team that was the subject of the 2024 book “The Boys of Riverside: A Deaf Football Team and a Quest for Glory.”

CLASS, REGION CHANGES: No real seismic shifts, but there was plenty of movement among Richmond-area schools.

No fewer than four Richmond schools, including perennial power Highland Springs, have dropped from Class 6, moving from Region 6A to Region 5C. The other three are Deep Run, Glen Allen and Meadowbrook. Conversely, Richmond schools J.R. Tucker and L.C. Bird have gone up from Region 5C to Region 6A.

Pay attention to Region 2A, where Richmond schools Armstrong and Thomas Jefferson have moved down a classification from Region 3B.

The most earth-shaking move perhaps took place in Augusta County, where Riverheads is back in Class 1, moving from Region 2B to Region 1B.

Riverheads has won VHSL Championships in the last seven seasons it spent in Class 1 (2016-22). From 2011, the Gladiators spent six seasons in Class 2/Division 2, reaching one State Final.

Lafayette and Louisa County are no strangers to moving into new neighborhoods. Lafayette has gone up from Region 3A to Region 4A, while Louisa has moved down from Region 5C to Region 4B.

Grafton also has made the move up from Region 3A to Region 4A.

Harrisonburg, which remained in Class 5 in 2024 despite losing half its enrollment when Rocktown High opened, has dropped two classifications from Region 5D to Region 3C.

Luray and Page County have played each other 64 times since 1961 and all have been regular-season games. The remain Bull Run District rivals, but they are now in different classifications as Luray has dropped from Region 2B to Region 1B.

Westmoreland has gone up from Region 1A to Region 1B, while John Champe has moved up from Region 4C to Region 5D.

Smith Mountain Lake Christian has become the second private school to join the VHSL. The Ospreys are in the Dogwood District but are not playing a complete district schedule and are not eligible for the postseason as a Region 1B school.

DISTRICT CHANGES: After 50 seasons of football, Martinsville has left the Piedmont District for the Three Rivers.

The Potomac and Shenandoah districts have two new members apiece. Alleghany (formerly Three Rivers) and Rockbridge County (Valley) have joined the Shenandoah, which now has nine members. John Champe (Catoctin) and Freedom-South Riding (Cedar Run) have joined the Potomac, which is up to eight teams.

In the 757, Gloucester has moved from the Peninsula District to the Bay Rivers. There are 11 schools in the Bay Rivers, meaning each member plays 10 district games.  After debuting in 2024, Rocktown will play a full Valley District schedule in 2025.
