Contract standoffs with Jerry Jones usually end in players getting paid. Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb would tell you so, getting a nice lump of cash last offseason. But Micah Parsons experienced a different result, winding up with the Green Bay Packers due to a blockbuster trade.
Speaking during a press conference on Thursday, Jones continually stated how this will benefit Dallas moving forward. Dallas decided to go with a trade for a reason. Jones believes if the Cowboys wanted to extend Parsons, they could have.
“The benefits of the trade made it different,” Jones said when asked about comparisons to Prescott and Lamb. “Make no mistake about it. We all know we could have signed Micah. But we decided to go with the trade.”
Looking at draft capital, Dallas received two first-round picks in return for Parsons. Defensive tackle Kenny Clark was part of the return as well, somebody the team will instantly rely on. A common theme of the press conference was Jones saying the Cowboys needed to be able to stop the run. Clark, playing up the middle, helps them out more than Parsons, the pass rusher.
NFL’s Jane Slater caught up with Parsons shortly after the trade was made. She reports Parsons approached the Cowboys with the intent of getting an extension done. Instead, an ultimatum was given and the two went their separate ways.
“I spoke with Micah Parsons this evening,” Slater said via X. “He says ‘genuinely gonna miss y’all.’ He says he and his team went back to the Cowboys about an extension with ’empathy’ when the trade interest was leaked this week. The Cowboys response according to Parsons was ‘play on the 5th year or leave.’”
Ian Rapoport added onto Slater’s report shortly after. “Yup. #Cowboys had a chance to stop the deal and negotiate with Micah Parsons,” he said via X. “They declined.”
Parsons ending up in Dallas meant a pretty penny coming from Jones. Green Bay gave him a four-year deal valued at $188 million. There is nobody in the NFL, taking out quarterbacks, with a more expensive contract than Parsons. The Packers are hoping he is able to elevate them to the next level.
Jones will now, instead, have to watch Parsons play for a different team moving forward. A reunion takes place Week 4 instead AT&T Stadium when the Cowboys host the Packers. Sunday Night Football being in town only adds to the drama, setting up what should be a fascinating game — on and off the field.
