Each week, the Blue White Illustrated staff hosts a chat thread to answer questions from our premium subscribers. The interest this week is obviously focused on Saturday’s game against Nevada and the various situations on the Penn State football team heading into the game. Here’s a quick selection of topics we cover this week in the message board thread, as asked by our Lions Den members:
- Will Penn State freshman defensive end Chaz Coleman start?
- Which competition on the right side of the line – right guard or right tackle – was closer in camp?
- How does the recruiting staff feel about the recent Khalil Taylor news?
- What is Davante Ross’ status for this weekend’s game?
One of the biggest stories of camp that has gone under-discussed is the situation on the right side of the offensive line. Anthony Donkoh, the team’s starting right tackle in 2025 in now playing guard and backup Nolan Rucci has taken the starting role outside. What did Rucci do to earn that job? It’s not about that, says Penn State head coach James Franklin.
“It was more about, how do we get our five best on the field? So it really had equally as much to do with the right guard battle. If Donkoh wouldn’t have been the best option at right guard, then it would have been a true competition at tackle. So it was really a combination of those two positions together. How do we get our best five on the field, even though we feel like we got seven guys that we can win with?”

The hype train for Penn State freshman Chaz Coleman is full steam ahead
As much as Franklin tries to downplay certain aspects of his team, there’s been little to stop the buzz around Coleman. When asked this week how much Coleman will play, Penn State’s head coach didn’t hold back.
“I think he’s gonna play a lot. It wouldn’t surprise me if he plays 30, 35 plays or so. I hate to say numbers, because once I do, he’s seen that, his mom has seen that, and you guys have wrote about it. But that would not surprise me.”
