‘I’m a fighter, that’s what I do’: Danny Garcia says he’s not retired yet

Despite his last performance, Danny Garcia believes he still has a lot of fight left in him.

Danny Garcia aims to line up one more big fight.

Former champion Danny Garcia has been in something of a semi-retirement phase lately, having only fought twice in the last four years, but here in this video interview with Ak & Barak he says he’s not quite done with the sport just yet as he expects to find his way back into the ring. Garcia last appeared in September 2024, getting stopped by a 41-year old Erislandy Lara in nine rounds. Here’s some excerpts of what he had to say.

Garcia on if we will see him back in the ring again

“Yeah. Most likely, yeah” Garcia would say. “At 154. Hopefully I can promote my own next fight, though. That’s a dream of mine.”

On whether he wants an easy touch or an actual big name fight

“That’s a good question. It’s going to be a big fight because I’m fighting in it and it’s probably going to be somebody that I go in there and do my thing and shine real quick. ‘Oh he’s back!’ You know how the game is.”

On if he’d be open to fighting Vergil Ortiz

“Yeah, I’m ready for one more big fight, one big payday. I’m a fighter, that’s what I do.”

On where he’s at in his career

“I got a lot of fight left in me, I do. I really do. I just feel like if you judge off my last fight you probably say no but the circumstances were different, I’m out the ring 28-months, I’m at a weight class higher, I was trying to make history, I really wasn’t into it. If I get a fight to get me back in the game, promote my own fight, I’m back in the mix, back in being a fighter mode, I’m not thinking about other stuff, then we get back in there and do another big fight. My mind’s focused, I’m locked in for boxing.”
