The Scottish left back was next in line anyway, but it’s nice to hear it from the boss.
The club announced on Friday that veteran defender Andy Robertson has been appointed vice captain officially, following the departure of the previous vice captain Trent Alexander-Arnold.
The squad has been adamant that there has been more of a leadership team within the squad than appointed leaders, but for league specific rules, there did need to be someone officially named to take over should the captain be unable to play. Robertson himself has even previously been third in line for the armband, following the departed right back, so while Roberston has seemingly fallen out of favor with Arne Slot, the appointment shouldn’t be much of a surprise.
Robbo also wears the captain’s armband for Scotland’s national team, so he is no stranger to being a leader on the pitch.
“It’s Robbo,” Slot told the press on Friday when asked who would be taking up the mantle.
“He has played here so many years, won the league twice. It was Virgil, Trent, Robbo and Mo [Salah] last season. Trent left, so there are a lot of logical reasons for [the decision].
“He is a very good player, plays many games, knows what it takes, knows the culture, but also knows the culture of the club and the dressing room.
“Apart from all the quality he shows on the pitch, he plays also a big role in the culture we have here at this club. Which is, [as] I said many times last season, the biggest gift I could get from Jürgen [Klopp].
“That’s also something we definitely have to keep for my successor to have, this same culture, if I am ever leaving this club.”
A fan favorite to boot, Robertson has been with the club for eight years now, making 344 competitive appearances since coming from Hull City in 2017, and winning everything there is to win in that time period.
Not bad for our wee lad from Glasgow.
