Cubs Minor League Wrap: August 29—Traintos, Alcántara lead Iowa past Vegas

Iowa blasts Las Vegas in the desert. South Bend is letting a playoff spot slip away.

Is it even worth mentioning that Iowa catcher Caleb Knight was activated off the Development List for the seventh time this year?

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs shot down the Las Vegas Aviators (Athletics), 10-2.

Starter Chris Kachmar battled control issues, but ended up just allowing one run on one hit over three innings. However, Kachmar walked five and hit one batter while striking out three.

Keegan Thompson pitched the next three innings without allowing a run and got the win. Thompson gave up three hits. He walked one and struck out three.

Third baseman Ben Cowles hit a solo home run in the top of the second inning, his ninth on the year. Cowles went 1 for 4 with a walk and two RBI, as that walk came with the bases loaded.

Left fielder Kevin Alcántara crushed his 17th home run on the year with the bases empty in the eighth. Alcántara went 2 for 4 with a walk and three RBI.

Second baseman James Triantos was 3 for 5 with a triple. He scored three times and had one run batted in.

First baseman Chase Strumpf went 2 for 4 with a walk. He had an RBI infield single as part of a four-run sixth inning.

The Cowles home run went 434 feet.

RBI single for Jonathon Long, who went 1 for 4 with a walk and one run scored.

The Alcántara home run “only” went 381 feet, but it was an oppo taco.

Knoxville Smokies

The Knoxville Smokies were oppressed by the Birmingham Barons (White Sox), 7-1.

Grant Kipp started and took the loss after he was knocked around for five runs on four hits over three innings. Kipp walked four, hit one batter and struck out three.

Second baseman Pedro Ramirez doubled in a run with two outs in the ninth to spoil the shutout. Ramirez went 2 for 4.

The Smokies only had four hits tonight and drew zero walks.

South Bend Cubs

The South Bend Cubs were edged by the Peoria Chiefs (Cardinals), 5-4. It was the Cubs’ fourth-straight loss.

Brooks Caple gave up a two-run home run in the first inning and two more in the third to take the loss. Caple’s final line was four runs on five hits over three innings. He walked one and struck out one.

First baseman Brian Kalmer hit a solo home run in the seventh inning, his ninth on the campaign. Kalmer went 1 for 4.

Left fielder Miguel Pabon was 2 for 4 and scored one run.

Third baseman Christopher Paciolla went 2 for 4 with a double.

Shortstop Cristian Hernandez was 1 for 3 with a double, two walks and two steals, giving him 52 steals on the year. Hernandez scored one run.

South Bend is now two games out of first place with just eight games to play.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans got their feathers plucked out by the Fayetteville Woodpeckers (Astros), 8-1.

Victor Zarraga started and took the loss after allowing two runs on four hits and two walks over 2.1 innings. Zarraga struck out three.

David Bracho gave up three more runs in 2.2 innings in his Pelicans’ debut. One of the three runs was unearned. Brach surrendered four hits, walked two and struck out three.

The Pelicans had just three hits in this game. Catcher Justin Stransky had an RBI single in the seventh inning. He was 1 for 3 with a walk.
