West Virginia, back under Rich Rodriguez again, also had to choose a new quarterback after two years with QB Garrett Greene. That new starter has now been named at fall camp in Morgantown.

Nicco Marchiol, their backup the past two seasons behind Greene, has been named as the Mountaineers’ QB1 coming into this season, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel. He beat out Jaylen Henderson, the transfer from Texas A&M, and Max Brown, the transfer from Charlotte, in the competition at WVU, among others.

Marchiol takes the job with 20 appearances, three of those being starts, as the most-experienced name in the battle. Over his three seasons with the program, Marchiol has posted 58.2% completion for 742 yards, eight touchdowns, and five interceptions when passing, while also rushing for 285 yards and three more scores on the ground. Within that, he went undefeated in his three games as a starter, all against conference competition versus Texas Tech, Arizona, and Cincinnati, with 66.3% completion at 144 passing yards per game with four passing touchdowns and three picks, while also rushing for 43 yards per game with one score made.

Henderson, after transferring in, is then left to be a backup again as he has been for much of his collegiate career with two seasons apiece at A&M, where he made his four career starts, as well as Fresno State. In his ten appearances with the Bulldogs and Aggies, Henderson has posted 67.4% completion for 764 yards, six touchdowns, and two interceptions.

That also leaves Brown as a reserve again too after two years at Florida followed by one this past year Charlotte. Brown, in ten games total with the Gators and 49ers, completed 51.2% of his throws for 753 yards, three touchdowns, and seven interceptions.

Rodriguez, in his first stint with the program to start the century from 2001 to 2007, got quality quarterback play out of Rasheed Marshall and then, more notably, Pat White. Now, the first one in his next tenure with West Virginia will be Marchiol to start with when the Mountaineers open the season against Robert Morris on August 30th.
