Michigan football injury report: Captain out for Week 1 game vs New Mexico

Michigan football was hoping 2nd-year captain Rod Moore could return, but he is still recovering from a torn ACL. Here is Wolverines' injury report.

The Michigan football season has arrived and with it, the first official gameday availability report.

Rod Moore, U-M's fifth-year safety and second-year captain will not suit up for the Wolverines as he continues his recovery from his ACL tear in the spring of 2024.

Moore told the Free Press he was "85%" in late July and while he was trending in the right direction, he would not guarantee a return date. He could be cleared in time for U-M's Week 2 matchup at Oklahoma on Saturday, Sept. 6.

Michigan safety Rod Moore walks toward the locker room as the team arrived off the bus ahead of the New Mexico game to open the season at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor on Saturday, August 30, 2025.

"I have to have my feet all the way back under me," Moore said in July. "I don't want to go out there and put bad tape out. I'd just rather be safer about how healthy I am before I go back on the field."

Also ruled out: Quarterback Davis Warren, running backs John Volker and Bryson Kuzdzal, linebacker Jaydon Hood and freshman tackle Andrew Babalola (who was known to be out with a knee injury − earlier this week, Sherrone Moore confirmed he would need season-ending surgery).

Senior defensive tackle Ike Iwunnah has also been ruled out, shortening U-M's planned six-man rotation on the interior line. The senior had seven tackles in five games last season.

In addition to Warren being out, quarterback Mikey Keene, the graduate transfer from Fresno State, was listed as questionable.

Keene is by far the most experienced quarterback on the roster, having started for four years, thrown for 8,245 passing yards and 65 touchdowns compared to 28 interceptions while completing 67.8% of his attempts. His likely absence leaves Jake Garcia – a late transfer from East Carolina – and Jadyn Davis as the backup QBs behind true freshman Bryce Underwood.

Bryce Underwood has his first Michigan practice at Jesuit High School in Tampa, where Michigan prepares is preparing for the ReliaQuest Bowl vs. Alabama on Friday, Dec. 27, 2024.

Jaden Mangham, an All-Big Ten honorable mention safety was also listed as questionable. Defensive backs coach LaMar Morgan recently referenced him as a riser and someone to keep an eye on this year.

Jalen Hoffman, who starred during the spring game and caught an 88-yard trick play touchdown from Underwood, was listed as questionable, as was Tevis Metcalf, the transfer from Arkansas and younger brother of likely starting defensive back TJ Metcalf.
