Ole Miss quarterback Austin Simmons made his first career start for the Rebels against Georgia State Saturday. His head coach, Lane Kiffin, spoke with the SEC Network about the start for the team.
Heading into the 2nd half, he wanted his Ole Miss team to clean a couple things up. Simmons threw two first half interceptions and the defense gave up a touchdown.
“Not turn the ball over. We moved the ball extremely well, barely had 3rd downs and we have a poor decision by Austin in the red zone and the pick and one before we’re beat at right guard,” Kiffin said. “The guy’s open for a 70-yard touchdown. So we gave up one play on defense. So we’re really playing really well. We just got the turnovers and the one play on defense.”
Simmons though is playing well for the Rebels and Kiffin noted that. Outside of one bad decision, he was happy with him.
“I like everything he did, but the one play, so you know, in a way that’s a pretty good half,” Kiffin said.
Ole Miss is currently leading Georgia State 39-7 in the 3rd quarter after Simmons just hit Caleb Odom for a 9-yard touchdown pass. Kiffin talked up Odom earlier this week during his radio show.
“He’s doing awesome. That’s an Alabama receiver that’s really big. You guys are going to like what you see in him,” Kiffin said. “Six-foot-six, really good range so I think you guys are going to be excited. That position is really, really good.”
