Ohio State, Penn State, and Oregon all won their season openers in Week 1
The first full weekend of college football is nearly in the books, but the first full slate of Big Ten football is complete. And what a Week 1 it was in the Big Ten. The top contenders in the conference prevailed in their season openers, highlighted by Ohio State's defensive battle against top-ranked Texas in a College Football Playoff semifinal rematch. Penn State, Orgeon, Illinois, and Michigan all picked up wins in their first games of the season as well.
Not every team in the Big Ten scored a victory in Week 1, and some teams showed some room for improvement despite getting in the win column. Overall, there were some good positive developments on display around the conference.
Team rankings in the US LBM Coaches Poll are noted where applicable.
No. 2 Ohio State 14, No. 1 Texas
A College Football Playoff rematch from last season came through with a similar result. Defending national champion Ohio State defended its home field against Texas, the top-ranked team in the nation, and Arch Manning in a purely defensive battle. New Buckeyes quarterback Julian Sayin connected with Carnell Tate for a 40-yard touchdown pass for what proved to be the game-winning score. Jeremiah Smith had 6 catches for 43 yards.
Next up for Ohio State: vs. Grambling
No. 3 Penn State 46, Nevada 11
Penn State got a strong showing from defensive end Dani Dennis-Sutton, who forced two fumbles in the first half that led to points by the Nittany Lions offense. New transfer wide receivers had an impact on the game, including Kyron Hudson with a late touchdown in the first half. Nevada, led by former Nebraska quarterback Chubba Purdy, did not score a touchdown until late in the fourth quarter.
Next up for Penn State: vs. FIU
No. 7 Oregon 59, Montana State 13

No. 12 Illinois 52, Western Illinois 3
Luke Altmyer passed for 3 touchdowns and Aidan Laughery rushed for 101 yards and 2 touchdowns as Illinois jumped all over their in-state FCS opponent in a Friday night season opener. The Illini were up 38-0 before giving up a field goal in the fourth quarter, but the Illini tacked on two more touchdowns to add to the lopsided final score.
Next up for Illinois: at Duke
No. 14 Michigan 34, New Mexico 17
Freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood lived up to the hype in his debut for Michigan. Underwood passed for 251 yards and a touchdown in his first game in a Michigan uniform. He was not the only impressive Wolverine. Alabama transfer Justice Haynes carried the football 16 times for 159 yards and 3 touchdowns in the primetime win.
Next up for Michigan: at Oklahoma
No. 19 Indiana 27, Old Dominion 14
New quarterback Fernando Mendoza, who transferred to Indiana from Cal, passed for 193 yards and rushed for 34 yards in his Hoosier debut. His touchdown pushed Indiana's lead to 17-7 shortly before halftime to allow Indiana to keep Old Dominion (coached by former Penn State offensive coordinator Ricky Rahne) at a safe distance the rest of the way. Old Dominion scored on the very first play of the game with a 75-yard touchdown run by quarterback Colton Joseph, but a 91-yard punt return by Indiana's Jonathan Brady tied the game late in the first quarter.
The highlight of the game may have been a 91-yard kickoff return for a score by Indiana's Jonathan Brady
Next up for Indiana: vs. Kennesaw State
Nebraska 20, Cincinnati 17
Nebraska got its season started on the right foot in the home of the Kansas City Chiefs. And with Patrick Mahomes checking out all of the action, Nebraska's Dylan Raiola passed for 243 yards and 2 touchdowns to help lead the Cornhuskers to victory. But it was a big defensive play from Brendan Sorsby and his end zone interception in the final minute of the game that sealed the win over Travis Kelce's alma mater
Next up for Nebraska: vs. Akron
Iowa 34, UAlbany 7
Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz moved into a tie for first place with Ohio State legend Woody Hayes for the most wins among Big Ten coaches, with a little bit of an asterisk. Despite being college football's all-time winningest coach with 409 career wins, Joe Paterno is fifth on the Big Ten's list with 162 wins as a coach in the Big Ten. Ferentz is up to 205 wins and one win away from taking over the top spot after a solid outing on the ground by Xavier Williams (122 yards, 1 TD).
Mark Gronkowski completed 8 of 15 passes for 44 yards and a touchdown, so there is room to improve, but the Hawkeye defense easily took care of their FCS opponent.
Next up for Iowa: at Iowa State
USC 73, Missouri State 13
Little time was wasted getting the USC offense rolling. Jayden Maiava racked up his 295 yards and 2 touchdowns in the first half against Missouri State and the Trojans put together a team total of 597 yards and forced three turnovers, and nine different players scored a touchdown for USC. Next up for USC: vs. Georgia Southern
Washington 38, Colorado State 21
Jonah Coleman helped get Washington started on the right foot by rushing for 177 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the Huskies pulled away from visiting Colorado State in the second half. Next up for Washington: UC Davis
Utah 43, UCLA 10
It was a disappointing showing by UCLA in its season opener as the Bruins were dominated by former conference foe Utah. Utah quarterback Devon Dampier passed for 206 yards and 2 touchdowns and rushed for a game high 87 yards and a touchdown. The debut of Tennessee transfer Nico Iamaleava failed to impress much, with 11-of-22 passing for 136 yards and 13 rushes for 47 yards, with 1 passing touchdown and an interception. But UCLA needed a lot more to keep pace with a stronger and far more consistent Utah program.
Next up for UCLA: at UNLV
Tulane 23, Northwestern 3
Tulane played with a little bit of a chip on their shoulder after being rejected by Northwestern to wear their white uniforms in honor of the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. The Green Wave bullied their way to a 20-point victory and forced five Northwestern turnovers. That included four interceptions thrown by Northwestern quarterback Preston Stone, who completed just 19 of 36 pass attempts.
Next up for Northwestern: vs. Western Illinois
Maryland 39, Florida Atlantic 7
The Maryland defense picked up two scores with Daniel Wingate opening the scoring with a 20-yard pick-six and a safety to shake off a rough opening drive with a handful of penalties. A 26-yard field goal by Jai Patel gave Rutgers a lead early in the fourth quarter.
Next up for Rutgers: vs. Miami (OH)
Wisconsin 17, Miami (OH) 0
Defense was the story for Wisconsin in its season opener against Miami Ohio. The Badgers allowed just 117 yards of total offense and blanked Miami on third-down conversion attempts (0-for-9). That meant the offense did not have to work too hard to pick up a win on Thursday night in Madison. Wisconsin combined for 165 rushing yards and Danny O'Neil passed for 120 yards and a touchdown (with an interception).
Next up for Wiscoinsin: vs. Middle Tennessee State
Michigan State 23, Western Michigan 6

The Spartans lost the turnover battle (2-1) but shut down the Broncos on the ground by allowing just 29 rushing yards. Next up for Michigan State: vs. Boston College
Purdue 31, Ball State 0
If there was a team in the Big Ten that needed to start the year with a confidence boost, it had to be Purdue. A 31-0 victory over Ball State was just what the doctor ordered for the Boilermakers. Next up for Purdue: vs. Southern Illinois
