Another big week of Georgia high school football is in the books, and new No. 1 sits atop the state rankings.
After knocking off Alabama 7A powerhouse Thompson, the Grayson Rams have taken over the top spot from Buford, who had the week off on a bye. There was plenty of movement elsewhere on the list as well, with a pair of new teams in the top-10 after strong starts to the year. A host of big games this coming weekend have the chance to shake things up even more, too.
Below are the top 25 teams in Georgia after the third week of the season, according to the Massey Ratings.
1. Grayson Rams (3-0)
Previous Ranking: No. 2
After a couple of in-state victories to open the season — as well as the loss of star quarterback Travis Burgess to a season-ending injury — Grayson traveled across state lines to face Alabama 7A powerhouse Thompson in a rematch of last year’s 15-14 thriller that the Rams won. Junior quarterback Duece Smith led the Rams on touchdown drives of 99 and 71 yards in the fourth quarter to rally Grayson to a 17-all tie. After scoring first in overtime, the Rams’ defense allowed a touchdown but stuffed the Warriors’ two-point attempt to escape with a 24-23 win.
2. Buford Wolves (2-0)
Previous Ranking: No. 1
Buford had the week off after a pair of wins over Milton and Benedictine Military School to open the first two games of the season. Another big matchup awaits this weekend against No. 15 Roswell, who comes into the game unblemished after wins over Peachtree Ridge and Walton.
3. Carrollton Trojans (3-0)
Previous Ranking: No. 3
Carrollton blitzed Columbia 41-7 to open the year, but the Trojans got everything they could handle from Rome in their second game of the year. Down 21-7, the Carrollton responded with 21 unanswered points to swing the momentum, buoyed by a pair of touchdown runs from Cam Wood. Rome had a chance to tie the game late in the fourth quarter, but the Trojans’ defense bowed its neck and forced a turnover on downs.
4. Thomas County Central Yellow Jackets (3-0)
Previous Ranking: No. 5
The Yellow Jackets have outscored their opponents 191-21 across their first three games, including a 79-14 shellacking of previously undefeated Florida State Univ. School. Thomas County Central took a 28-0 lead early and never looked back, leading 51-7 at the half.
5. Douglas County Tigers (2-0)
Previous Ranking: No. 7
Douglas County, despite having one of the state’s most loaded rosters, has had a handful of big tests early on. The latest came against No. 15 Newton on Friday night, but the Tigers passed with flying colors by pulling out a 27-21 win. After taking a 21-7 lead late in the second quarter, they had to fend off a hungry Newton team that came back to close it within a touchdown on multiple occasions. However, some timely special teams and stout defense helped them hold on for their third win of the year.
6. Creekside Seminoles (3-0)
Previous Ranking: No. 11
At this time a year ago, Creekside was licking its wounds after a 70-0 drubbing at the hands of Texas powerhouse DeSoto. The Seminoles were overmatched from start to finish in that one, but came back with revenge on their mind in 2025. Boy, did they get it. Creekside scored 35 first-half points, then put its foot on the gas some more to avenge their embarrassing loss from last year in a 70-28 domination.
7. Lee County Trojans (2-0)
Previous Ranking: No. 5
After an early-season blowout of Warner Robins and a postponement, Lee County got a heck of a game on from Tift County on Friday. Favored by more than four touchdowns, the Trojans pulled out a 41-33 victory to beat their rivals for the 22nd year in a row. Due to the aforementioned postponement, they’ll have a quick turnaround to play the final two quarters of their game vs. Hapeville Charter on Tuesday night.
8. Langston Hughes (2-0)
Previous Ranking: No. 6
Langston Hughes will be well-rested heading into a massive showdown with No. 5 Douglas County this weekend after having the week off. There is arguably no bigger game in the state on Friday night than that one.
9. McEachern Indians (2-0)
Previous Ranking: No. 15
McEachern has been one of the most pleasant surprises around the state early this season. The Indians started the year with a 50-17 romp over Walton to open the year, then upset North Cobb last weekend. Winless Marietta gave them a heck of a fight on Friday, but the Indians ultimately held on for a 16-10 victory. After the bye week, an undefeated Campbell squad awaits them.
10. Gainesville Red Elephants (3-0)
Previous Ranking: No. 12
Led by a smothering defense and Clemson four-star quarterback commit Kharim Hughley orchestrating the offense, Gainesville is off to an undefeated start. After Friday’s 42-point rout of Westlake, the Red Elephants are giving up an average of just 7 points per game through their first three. A massive test awaits in two weeks when they host No. 3 Carrollton, though.
