South Carolina football took a victory lap on social media after a 24-11 win against Virginia Tech on Sunday. The Gamecocks poked fun at their opponent on X, quote tweeting a post that the Hokies made pregame.
South Carolina’s social media team edited the original photo that Virginia Tech posted, which showed two players looking up at a sign that read “Week One.” However, the Gamecocks edit featured the text “Gamecocks win” in its place.
South Carolina used a big defensive effort to come away with the win as it did not allow a touchdown. The Gamecocks also got a solid day out of quarterback LaNorris Sellers, who finished with 209 yards passing and two total touchdowns.
South Carolina found itself clinging to a 17-11 lead in the fourth quarter before Sellers connected with receiver Nyck Harbor on a 64-yard touchdown to put the game out of reach. That allowed them to start off the season 1-0 as coach Shane Beamer notched a win against his father, Frank Beamer‘s, old team.
The win certainly will have plenty celebrating around Columbia and the troll from the Gamecocks on social media shows that. South Carolina now has a short week ahead of it as it moves on to face South Carolina State on Saturday in a Week 2 matchup.
LaNorris Sellers gifts Frank Beamer game ball after South Carolina tops Virginia Tech
Frank Beamer, Shane’s father, was the long-time coach at Virginia Tech. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2018, largely due to his contributions to the Hokies.
So after the game, South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers made sure to seek out Frank Beamer. He had a game ball to hand him.
Sellers handed Frank Beamer the game ball while the latter was seated on a golf cart inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Beamer was, pardon the term, beaming as he received it. Clearly it was a special moment for him.
Shane Beamer and his team will have playoff ambitions this year and getting off to a hot start was key. Not every team this weekend played a tough non-conference opponent like South Carolina, so confidence should be sky high going forward.
And for Frank Beamer, he now has a special memory of his son upending his former team. Complete with a game ball to remember it.
