Oklahoma City Thunder fans troll Sabrina Ionescu for SGA comment after New York Liberty's elimination.
If there is one person you don't want to see have a grudge against you, it's sports fans. As soon as you say anything antagonizing about their favorite team or player, they will patiently wait out the first chance they can get to run a victory lap. Sabrina Ionescu learned that with Oklahoma City Thunder fans.
The New York Liberty were bounced from the 2025 WNBA playoffs in a Game 3 loss to the Phoenix Mercury. Ionescu struggled in the series. She averaged 15.7 points on 34% shooting. The Round 1 exit led Thunder fans to bring up a months-old viral clip.
In a May regular-season win over the Golden State Valkyries, Breanna Stewart finished with 27 points that included a 15-of-19 night from the free-throw line. She was the topic of discussion in the postgame setting. When asked if they've ever seen a player draw 16 fouls like Stewart did, Ionescu quipped Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
It was obviously a tongue-in-cheek answer. Ionescu β like everybody else β has likely seen the ongoing joke that Gilgeous-Alexander is a free-throw merchant, or somebody who relies on drawing fouls to get most of their points. While there was no ill will in the comment, Thunder fans have grown to hate the rhetoric over the years.
But hey, it comes with the territory. The Thunder had one of the most dominant seasons in NBA history last year. They finished with a historic 68-14 regular-season record and captured the Larry O'Brien trophy. After Ionescu was eliminated, they took to social media to bring back her joke.
Such is life in sports. Sometimes you get to make the joke. Other times, you're the one who's being trolled. Ionescu must've known in the back of her mind that Thunder fans would eventually get their chance to talk back and did so:
