Cubs advised to gamble on Mets' fallen star for closer role

Could this shaky reliever be a legitimate option for the Cubs this winter?

The Chicago Cubs have explored several options to close out games. Over the winter, they signed Ryan Pressly to take over the role, but he struggled mightily and was replaced by Daniel Palanecia.

Palencia has performed well in his new role, appearing in 52 games and holding a 3.00 ERA with 22 saves across 51 innings of work. Unfortunately, they will be without their high-leverage man for some time as he currently sits on the 15-day IL with a right shoulder strain.

His availability for the postseason is uncertain, which is not ideal for the Cubs. They will likely target some bullpen pitchers this winter, and could take a gamble on this failed New York Mets trade acquisition.

The Mets looked to bolster their bullpen by acquiring Ryan Helsley at the trade deadline. However, he has not performed well with his new club, and his free-agent stock has taken quite the hit.

Helsley pitched fine before being traded to the Mets, so the talent is still there. Sports Illustrated's Zach Pressnell argues he would be a perfect fit for Chicago here.

"Helsley was dominant in the first half, but fell off when he joined the Mets. His price tag is likely a bit lower now than it was a few months ago, though his talent is still there. The Cubs could target him on a four-year deal to make the flamethrower the closer of the future in the Windy City."

The Cubs could take a gamble on Helsley and sign him to a multiyear deal. If he can return to form, he could be one of the biggest steals over the winter.
