Lions vs Ravens Week 3: Final injury report and medical analysis for the Monday Night Football matchup
The Lions seek redemption as they head back to the site of their 38-6 loss in 2023. The defense that day gave up touchdowns in their first four drives, putting the game quickly out of reach. This time, they'll have to deal not just with Lamar Jackson who is 24-2 versus the NFC in his career, but also Derrick Henry who is about as hard to tackle as a runaway bus.
Like the bus jump in Speed, some of the things Derrick Henry does at 6'3" and 247 pounds seem to defy the law of physics.
What will help the Lions defense is their favorable health status as all starters are accounted for... except Marcus Davenport who has had some twists and turns involving his injury over the past week. Time for the backup defensive ends like Al-Quadin Muhammad to step up.
Here is the final injury report for the Ravens game including relevant quotes from Dan Campbell's Saturday press conference.
TRENDS
- The Lions got an expected upgrade over the week with Jack Campbell, along with an upgrade to DJ Reed.
- The Ravens saw an upgrade with starting CB, Nate Wiggins.
(NP - no practice, LP - limited practice, FP - full practice)

DETROIT LIONS
OUT - Marcus Davenport, EDGE (shoulder chest) starter
What was initially officially listed as a shoulder during the last game was changed to a chest on the practice injury reports. While the exact diagnosis is unknown, the initial video was concerning for a pec injury, which may in fact turn out to be the case.

A pec injury can be anything from a mild strain (partial tear) with a 3-4 week timeline, to a full rupture that is likely season-ending.
Dan Campbell's statements suggest a timeline that is hopefully on the shorter end:
"We're still trying to decide what to do. We don't feel like this is season ending.... We'll have a good idea of the timeline either today or tomorrow."
There is still time for Davenport to go on IR this weekend, which will provide a lot more clarity regarding the timeline. If he does not go on IR, that implies he could be back within about four weeks. If he goes on IR, he's out for at least four weeks and potentially much longer.
QUESTIONABLE - Taylor Decker, OT (shoulder/rest) starter
Decker had offseason shoulder surgery and may get rest days indefinitely. Last week, he didn't practice at all yet still played in the game. This week, he was able to get an FP which is a nice improvement from last week. I would expect him to be in on Monday.
QUESTIONABLE - Jack Campbell, LB (ankle) starter
Here is a pic of Campbell with his right ankle area wrapped up after last game.
The ankle injury from last week may have been aggravated when his leg collided with Brian Branch last game. Campbell didn't seem affected prior or after the Branch collision as he played every snap until garbage time. All this, along with a Saturday FP status, strongly suggests that he will be in.
QUESTIONABLE - DJ Reed, CB (knee) starter
It's uncertain if his knee injury occurred last game or in practice this week. While there are no details, the 2x LP and end-of-week FP are reassuring signs that the injury is not serious and he'll be in.
QUESTIONABLE - Kerby Joseph, S (knee) starter
Joseph had a left knee bothering him much of training camp, and the current issue could be a continuation. The diagnosis is unknown, but it's very reassuring that he got 3x LP during the week. If the injury was at all concerning, you'd expect this veteran to get at least one NP during the week. I'd expect him to be in.
IN - Trevor Nowaske, LB (elbow)
IN - Sione Vaki, RB (hamstring)
Both Nowaske and Vaki have yet to play this season. Regarding these two players, Campbell stated:
"They also bring things offensively and defensively that we can use."
Hoping this means Vaki can eventually start taking some RB snaps to reduce the load on Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery over the long season.
PUP/NFI - must miss first 4 games of season
- Alim McNeill, DT (ACL) - Expect November
- Malcolm Rodriguez, LB (ACL) - Expect late October to November
- Miles Frazier, OG (knee) - Maybe October
- Josh Paschal, EDGE (unspecified cleanup surgery) - Maybe October. On Saturday, Campbell provided this nebulous update on Paschal: "He's improving, that's the best I can tell you."
IR (injured reserve) - eligible to return this season
(Rules recap: Must stay on IR for minimum 4 games. Only 8 are allowed to return during regular season plus bonus 2 for the playoffs. Last season, Lions used 7 returns during regular season and 1 during playoffs.)
- Shane Zylstra, TE (ankle 9/16) - Can return Week 7.
- Jamarco Jones, OT (ankle 9/4) - Ruled out for season.
- Ezekiel Turner, LB (Achilles 8/26) - Unknown prognosis but likely long-term. Note: there is uncertainty whether Turner was actually designated eligible to return on the cutdown date.
IR - NOT eligible to return this season (key players listed)
- Ennis Rakestraw, CB (shoulder)
- Levi Onwuzurike, DT (ACL)
- Kenny Yeboah, TE (unspecified)
- Colby Sorsdal, OG (leg)
- Justin Herron, OT (arm)
- Dan Jackson, S (leg)
OTHER
- Ahmed Hassanein, EDGE (pec strain 8/16) - This 6th-round rookie was waived with an injury settlement before the season. The Lions can sign him 3 weeks after the duration of the settlement - the date of which is unknown. A mild pec strain could be ready within 1 month, so it's possible he could be back with the team in October.
