Timo Werner used to be RB Leipzig’s star striker and reliable goalscorer, having found the net 113 times in 213 appearances – and the fans clearly haven’t forgotten that.
After returning from a loan spell at Tottenham, Werner was included in Leipzig’s squad for the first time this season for Saturday’s 3–1 win over 1. FC Köln.
During the warm-up, he was celebrated with chants, and Werner acknowledged the fans with applause. During the match, the home fans repeatedly called for him to be substituted on – but were left disappointed, as he remained on the bench.
“Timo, unfortunately, wasn’t on the pitch for large parts of the pre-season,” explained head coach Ole Werner, adding that other players currently “have the edge” over the former Chelsea forward.
“Every player can recommend themselves through training performance and improve their position. That applies to everyone. Some guys are still ahead of him in our assessment. We’ll see how this develops over the next few weeks,” he added.
Leipzig captain David Raum emphasized that Werner remains highly valued at the club.
“He’s a bit of the face of the club. He’s done a lot for the club. Many players have great respect for him and really value that he is part of our team,” Raum said.
“He gives everything in training, is very positive in the dressing room, makes everyone feel good, and is very well-liked. Having him in the squad today is really nice and makes us happy for him. We’re glad to have him.”
