German Neugebauer surges to world decathlon gold

Germany's Leo Neugebauer sealed gold in the decathlon at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo on Sunday after a holding his nerve in the decisive 1,500 metres. The 25-year-old upgraded his silver at the 2024 Olympics to gold in the Tokyo rain with an overall score of 8,804.

Germany's Leo Neugebauer sealed gold in the decathlon at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo on Sunday after a holding his nerve in the decisive 1,500 metres.

The 25-year-old upgraded his silver at the 2024 Olympics to gold in the Tokyo rain with an overall score of 8,804.

He is the first German world champion in the decathlon since Niklas Kaul's victory six years ago. Kaul finished fourth overall after a photo finish in a dramatic concluding 1,500m.

Puerto Rico's Ayden Owens-Delerme had to settle for second with 8,784. American Kyle Garland hung on for third.
