Arizona Diamondbacks cling to wild-card hopes behind Zac Gallen’s strong start
“I love it,” Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said of his patchwork roster. “That’s the picture we’re painting right now. We sold out to that. I understand why (general manager) Mike (Hazen) did it. We didn’t give him a lot to lean on, and he made that decision at the trade deadline. But I think a lot of guys have been responding.”

Manager Torey Lovullo had a left-hander warming in the bullpen should Bader extend the inning and bring the lefty-swinging Kyle Schwarber to the plate. Veteran catcher James McCann knew what Gallen was thinking and wanted to give him a minute to breathe, so he trotted out to the mound to talk with him. “I’m gassed,” Gallen told McCann. “I know,” McCann responded. “But you got this. This is your guy. We’re going to go right after him and get you out of here.”

In 1945, a balloon bomb launched by Japan landed in Oregon. It fell upon a woman and five children, who died when it exploded. These were the only World War II casualties on US soil.
