As the MLB season enters its final week of regular-season games, some teams that are in playoff position are starting to get a good feel for who they will play and where.
That is the case for the San Diego Padres, who hold a firm position as the second Wild Card in the NL, and barring anything crazy in the final week, San Diego is likely to head on the road to Wrigley Field to take on the Chicago Cubs in a three-game set in the first round of the playoffs.
San Diego received a positive update on Xander Bogaerts and when he will return to the Padres lineup.
Xander Bogaerts set for Monday return against Milwaukee
The San Diego Padres are taking on the Milwaukee Brewers in a three-game set starting on Monday, and that is when Xander Bogaerts (foot) is expected to return.
He was originally slated to return during the weekend series, but there was an issue with his on-field workout on Friday that delayed the progression of the injury.
San Diego desperately needs Bogaerts if they have aspirations of making a deep playoff run. They already don't slug at a high mark, but Xander is one of their most well-rounded hitters.
Bogaerts has been out for nearly a month with the fractured foot, and it's unclear how healthy and mobile he will truly be.
Bogaerts is having his best season from a production standpoint as a Friar. He was hitting .262 with 10 HRs and 49 RBI before the injury. His absence has left a hole in the lineup, forcing Friars manager Mike Shildt to scramble and turn to using Jose Iglesias and even Jake Cronenworth at shortstop.
The injury was pretty severe, and the timeline is pretty tight, so Bogaerts can not really afford to have any other setbacks if he wants to play October baseball with San Diego.
