Steffen Baumgart won back-to-back games in Frankfurt after his Union Berlin side triumphed 4-3 in a thrilling encounter. The charismatic coach wasn’t on the touchline for the closing stages, though, as he was sent off for kicking a white paper ball onto the field in the 87th minute.
"I saw similar incidents, and thought it would be allowed," said Baumgart after the game in a flash interview with DAZN. "It was the right decision from the referee. I'm sorry. But, actually, I'm not sorry because I'm not going to hold back my emotions
“The boys did well in the last ten minutes I missed. Now, they’ll have to play without me next week.”
Baumgart’s reaction that led to the red card happened after Frankfurt awarded a penalty-kick while his team was leading 4-2. Union will host one of Baumgart’s old clubs next weekend as they face Hamburger SV, who scored and won in the Bundesliga for the first time in seven years the other day.
